Germany & Austria in May 2012
Planning a holiday in Germany & Austria in May 2012. We are from India. We are 2 adults and 2 children below 10 years. We are interested in doing a mix of city and small scenic town/villages. Looking forward to good wholesome German food & Austrian food - not something pricey and touristy. Can someone recommend an itinerary for approx 15-20 days. We are budget conscious and would like to stay in places that are safe & clean with attached bathroom with easy accessibility to train and local restaurants/chain stores. We will be using public transport. Could you please highlight the dos and donts whilst travelling in Germany & Austria. Also, would appreciate some info on the usage of trains in Austria?
We would like to visit :
Rhine (any recommendations on the base town for 3 nights)
Berlin
Dresden or any smaller village/town
Munich
Garmisch
Salzburg or any smaller village close to Salzburg which is cheaper to stay and easier to get to Salzburg
Innsbruck or any smaller village cloe to Innsbruck which is cheaper to stay and easier to get to Innsbruck
Any recommendations for small scenic Austrian village or farm where we can stay for a couple of nights.
Not sure if I can add Prague.

I currently live in Vienna and find it AMAZING that you do not include Vienna on your list . . . it is TOTALLY worth making the trip out from Salzburg. As far as "Any recommendations for small scenic Austrian village or farm where we can stay for a couple of nights." I went there with my wife and little boy . . . he was 1.5 at the time. Please feel free to ask me any questions about Vienna specifically and/or Austria. My wife is from Czech so I would greatly encourage you to add Prague . . . the most beautiful city in Europe I've seen so far.

Thanks to both of you for your quick and useful reverts.
This year in May we have done our first European visit to Munich-Garmisch-Berchtesgaden-BF-Eschwege.
My husband loved Munich with its fantastic architecture and I am a foodie - I loved their Schwein Haxen. WOW!
We loved Garmish with its beautifully painted buildings. However, because of our very tight itinerary, we never go to go to Innsbruck or Salzburg.
Currently all options are under consideration. We could land in Frankfurt or Munich and fly out of Vienna or the other way round. But, we find the cities an expensive option to stay for more days. In cities we are okay with 3 star hotel or 2 star hotel but it should be conveniently located near the train station as we have no car and will be using the public transport. Any recommendations are welcome.
Also, recommend some small villages & farms as the kids enjoy being with animals.

with your knowledge of Austria & your wife being Czech, I wuold like to ask your advice of my trip as well.
12 years ago, we visited Paris & then Germany - Munich & the Czech republic - Prague, Ceske Budovice (sp?), & few other small towns. Loved it all!
This time, in late June we will be visiting with less time. We will be in Brno (Czech republic) for 1 day business trip and planning to mainly see Austria due to proximity but what would you recommend? I have one day to do day trip from Brno while husband in meetings. Then we basically have about 4 2/3 days to do/see other places. We are definitely flying into Vienna to get to Brno. I plan to spend 2 days in Vienna and then trying to decide how to spend the other 2 1/2 days.
Do we go to Budapest, or do we just stay in Austria and possibly go to Hallstatt and enjoy boat trip, hiking, cave tour? Innsbruck looks awesome but too far with our time.

i was one time in Salzburg for 4 days and 2 times in Vienna each time for almost a week.
so:
Salzburg.
1. accommodations: www.ammoos.at...the bus station is near the guest house, the guest house is amazing and you have a 15 minutes to Salzburg's center
2. you've said that you would like to see the alps...well from salzburg there are 1/2 day tours to the surrounding areas. Königssee, Berechtsgaden, etc. www.panoramatours.com
3. from salzburg you can go to vienna by train or the other way around.
4. I totally recommen the salzburg card.
tips:
if you go with your family by train between the 2 cities in Austria buy the "Einfach raus Ticket". 5 persons can go with the same tickte for 28 euros..but only with the regionals trains. which are okay as far far as speed is concerned.
if you go from Munich to Salzburg the buy the "Bayern Ticket". same as the above...i don't remember the price.
by the way the ticket are available 24 hours any direction you want, as long as you travel with certain train types.
Vienna:

2. Vienna is amazing...you can mostly walk and see most f the tourist attractions...one thing I found cool for families with kids: the schoenbrunn castle...they have tours especially for kids (the kids get to wear costumes) and there is a zoo...you can spend a whole day there...
3. anothe must in Vienna is the Hofburg Palace...in the courtyard...there is always something going on...and if you for something cool...get tickets to the show of the Spanish Riding school...
in both cities...check the calendar for national holidays...or religious holidays when there are no working days...just in case...
Prague is also an amazing city but you have to want to wlak a lot...is an amazing city just to walk around and see building and parks. Pay attention to the exchange rate...at the banks to change 100 euros in Crowns the commission is 4 euros...and you find out only afterwards...
plus be careful at the souvenir shops...
the train tickets for the route Salzburg - Prague are waaaaaayyyy cheaper if you buy them from Munich. in any D-Bahn agency...the personnel is very very friendly and they all speak english.
