Bavarian Inn Shepherdstown, West Virginia
Has anyone stayed at this inn recently? Getting very mixed reviews on Trip Advisor. Looking for a weekend getaway from Ohio and meeting friends coming from the Philadelphia area so this would be an appropriate meeting place. Any other suggestions?

no, I stayed there a few years ago, though (maybe 4?). It was very nice, I loved it. Restaurant not bad, either, and very convenient. Now I had one of the rooms overlooking the river, so maybe it wasn't the cheapest, I don't remember the level. Even in a couple years, I don't see how it could deteriorate that much, the room was huge and very well-appointed, like a suite.
I just checked the reviews and they average 4.0. The most recent ones were all really good except one. And a couple are midrange but seem to be complaining about the dining room. What are you expecting anyway.

I was there in 2010 and returning this winter. I think it's a great place for a weekend getaway. Staff are fantastic -- friendly, engaging, informative. For eating, terrific menu: mixed of the tried and true as well as unique specials. Formal dining room as well as more relaxed rathskeller with a bar.
Rooms, especially the suites overlooking the Potomac, will make you want to stay in. But if you do want to get out, you can walk to shops, bars, and other restaurants for variety in Shepherdstown. Nice coffee house, Lost Dog, great place to relax, have some dessert. Grapes and Grains Gourmet often has wine tastings.
Antietam National Battlefield is nearby -- very well preserved and well organized for exploring.

How far are you willing to travel? Seven Springs Resort or Nemacolin in the Laurel Highlands is very pretty and lots to see & do. There is Frank Lloyd Wright architecture to explore (Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob), white water rafting and a Rev War battlefiled. It is just south of PA turnpike.

A group of us stayed at the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B in Shepherdstown. We really enjoyed the inn- no view but a great location on the main street of town, lovely decor, and scrumptious breakfast. The innkeepers were very nice, and the inn worked for our girlfriend reunion because we could hang out on the second floor balcony to chat and they provided a guest fridge where we could keep wine.
We really enjoyed the town of Shepherdstown, taking long walks along the Potomac towpath, hiking a nearby battlefield (can't remember the name), and dining at Three Onions and The Press Room. We went to Berkley Spring

Anyway, we visited Berkeley Springs one of the days for spa treatments and lunch and enjoyed that town too. Harper's Ferry is also a nice place to visit. If you are an ambitious walker you can park on car in Harper's Ferry, drive another to Shepherdstown, then walk back along the river for, I think, about 7 miles. Very pretty!
It's a nice area.
