We're off to Saint Kitts this Saturday for a week. Usually I've done my homework well in advance for a vacation...but alas, now I'm cramming. Can anyone recommend the best places to snorkel from shore?

First, you should know that because the waters surrounding St. Kitts lack a comprehensive reef system snorkeling directly off the beach is not all that good. Having said that, you'll find a liitle snorkeling around the man-made breakwater at the Marriott Beach, some small but colorful fish around the rocks at Sounth Frigate Bay (near Timothy Beach Resort), and around the rocks at South friars Beach and there are a few (very small) spots off of Cockelshell Beach (near Raeggae Beach Bar) and Turtle Beach. If the currents have been right you might see some old cannons not too far from shore on WhiteHouse Beach but often they are covered with sand. If they are covered the only thing you'll see there are some debris from a storm ravaged building and a few starfish.

The best snorkeling around St. Kitts is a Shitten Bay but that area is accessible only by boat. There are several catamaran trips that operate out of Port Zante (in Basseterre) that make a stop there on the way to Nevis.

Snorkeling is not a strong suit for either St. or Nevis.

RoamsAround is 100% correct and don't bother going over to Nevis for it actually is not as good as whatever you can see around St, Kitts.

Just to add to the above posts--on South Friars beach go snorkeling in front of the Shipwreck Bar (at the Southern end) and for a catamaran charter, I recommend Leeward Island Charters:

We snorkelled off Turtle Beach in May this year and had a great time. We saw loads of fish, some rays, lobster and the water was clear and SO warm
