silver and tanzanite - cozumel
hi, we're staying in tankah bay and plan a day trip to cozumel to play and to shop for silver and tanzanite. (silver bracelets, rings for me and a chain and cross for a man. tanzanite ring or pendant - possibly loose stones) i'm hoping someone can offer specific suggestions on shops to seek out? also we will take the ferry over from playa. should we/can we take our rental car over on the ferry?
thanks. virginia

Hi Virginia,
Don't know your answer to that one. I've flown into Coz to take the ferry over to Playa but didn't shop. If you don't want crowds you might want to check and see what days the cruise ships come in so you can avoid them. Tankah Bay is beautiful, I stayed there a couple of years ago. The snorkeling is amazing. Have a great time!

I spend several weeks in Cozumel each winter. My favorite silver places are Cinco Sol and Silver Emporium. Both because they have good quality items and they don't play games with the prices. The prices are reasonable and discounted for cash vs. credit card sales. All of the other little places play such outrageous pricing games -- earings start at $70 and eventually you can get them for $10 if you play the game. I just don't like it. Its a waste of my time. I also never trust the quality of the jewelry in those places. As for tanzanite, I've never purchased any. There are hords of stores that sell it. Just make sure you know the difference between real and lab-made tanzanite and ask if its been heat treated or enhanced before you buy.

Taking the ferry from Playa to Cozumel, you are right in the shopping district. No need for a car. We were shopping for silver and tanzanite last July and found the best selection at Silver Emporium. Lots of stores -- I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

sue - as snorkeling is the main focus of our trip i am thrilled to hear you say tankah is very good. we will have a rental car - so do you have any other fairly nearby beaches to recommend for more good snorkeling.
and, have you ever driven down to punta allen? we are thinking about it. may only get part way if the road is bad the day we go. can you drive down to any good beaches along the way?
