Cruise Discounts for Florida Residents. Myth or Reality?
I mentioned to a Florida relative that I had learn of last minute type deals for Florida residents for cruises departing from their State ports. He looked at me like I had two heads.
Is there any truth to this? I googled the topic and came back with statement to that effect, but no specifics on how to go about this. Can anybody offer some more info? Experiences?

It it not a myth. We shared a table
w/a FL couple who did this often. I believe the caveats are: they were not assigned a cabin until they reached the ship & were not
informed when they are sailing until a short time before departure.
Ergo, the ship can then sail at close to or at full capacity.
To qualify you must present absolute
proof that you are a full-time FL resident.

Resident rate promotions are common and are applicable to every state, not just Florida. Nearly every major cruise line has them. They rotate them between states and different cruises. A good travel agent will be able to help locate them. You can often get cabin assignments as well. Last minute deals really happen 2-3 months from sailing if there are cabins left. Cruise Lines are too smart to wait until 1-2 weeks out to offer a sale, although you might see that on occasion.

I'm a Floridian, and have a cruise booked for five couples from several states, to Canada/NE, Sept 06. I have repeatedly checked the fare to see if it has gone lower. Each time I put in a different state, but the fare is the same no matter which state I put in. This happens no matter which website I use.
I wonder if the last minute/unassigned cabin sale is really not related to your state, but rather the fact that you are willing to go with the unknown. I know a couple too who get unbelievable cabin rates, but they cruise frequently, go last minute, inside cabin, don't care about the ports...

You are unlikely to find a reduced rate promo for a specialized sailing such as what you are booked on. That is a very limited season with only a handful of cruise lines available. But you can sure keep trying. When they have these promos - you can get balconies or what have you. Sometimes cabin assignments or guarantees. Just depends what is on "sale".

We saw an offer on a Carrebian cruise, and it listed the states you would have to live in, to apply. Our state, Nevada, was listed, but Calif wasn`t. There were maybe 10 states listed. Only one person sailing had to live in the state specified. I thought it was very strange.

Why only Florida residents? There are many snowbirds who come there in winter and probably many of them would like to take advantage of the offer because there wouldn't be any additional airfare involved.

If you adventurous you can do what we did (and we are not Florida residents)...found a cruise we liked and we knew it wasn't sold out. Showed up at the pier on the departure day and got on by talking to the purser. The ship was departing, not full, and they were very happy to sell us a cabin at a great rate..but you have to be flexible.

Connette's right - it had to be before 2001. A group of friends and I were going on a cruise in 2003, and one gal decided to join us at the last minute. When she went to AAA to pay (the day before the cruise), she was told it was too late. Not enough time to add her name and have it clear Homeland Security.

I could see if somebody joined the cruise in a foreign country and was coming to US, but think about it folks, the cruisers are leaving from the US and coming back to the US. If you were a terrorist, then homeland security did not do it's job letting you into the country in the first place.....
Bunch of morons running that department. Our liberty is slowly taken away under the disguise of worthless security.....
Anyway, I'm reporting from beautiful Vina Del Mar, Chile and looking at 2 cruise ships docked in Valparaiso, about 2-3 miles away (in straight line) 4-5 miles driving on the coastal road. The view from the beautiful Sheraton in Vina allows this. I'm not sure what the smaller ship is, it does look like a Princess ship, but right behind it, is the new QM2? QE2? I'm not sure, but it's a big mother! It's about twice the size of the other one. I believe that I will pass by the harbor on the way to airport in about an hour. I would love to see it upclose......

I just thought of something.
I believe if the restrictions are there it may not be HS, but rather the cruise company. After all I could go to the airport and buy a last minute ticket to anywhere in the world, so if the airlines can do it, so can the cruise lines, if they chose to.

And are you implying that they are worthless no matter what they say?

Joan...No, I was referring to your friend who went to AAA the Travel Agency...My experience with Travel Agents has shown me that they may not always be well informed even tho they are well intended.Worthless? No not at all, I wouldn't generalize in that fashion.And if I cam off as being rude, I apologize.It is rare, very rare that I have a bad hair day.But, for compelling reasons, I did have to get a buzz cut yesterday....I'll get used to it, and yes those curls WILL grow back.
