-Lodging Help- February

We're planning 1 week in Febuary-teen and Mom-theater and first trip to NYC adventure. We don't need fancy but naturally want clean. We have reservations at Radio City Apts for about $100/night w/cooking which I thought sounded great but a friend says it not a "real neighborhood" and we'd do better at 23rd St between 7 & 8th for neightborhood feel-is that midtown? We would like to be able to heat tea, soup but are not terribly attached to a kitchen. We're looking for clea & access to subway. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I can't help much with your question, but a suggestion I have is to re-post with a clearer title. You probably clicked on NY for the search/cataloging criteria, but since all messages go into one big U.S. forum, those who might have answers to your question might skip right over it when they read the title "-Lodging Help- February"

Since your question seems to be more about NYC LODGING LOCATION (whether it was February OR August), I think that would make a clearer title.

Good luck & happy trails.

When a friend says, "it's not a neighborhood" I'd calmly explain that I'm not planning to move and live there.

What are you planning to do? You mention theatre. Will that just be one night or several through the week?
Which sounds easier and more pleasant -- coming out of the theatre at night, taking a short stroll, perhaps stopping for a drink (or after theatre supper) on the way to your "home" just a few blocks away? Or allowing time to make sure you can get to the theatre by subway on time each night you see a play, then taking the subway back "home" each night after the show?

I live in a "neighborhood". We don't have Times Square where we live. I love spending a week in New York and staying in the "heart of the action" which to me is Times Square and the theatre district, because I can't get that at home. Several years ago I spent a month in New York and I enjoyed living in a "neighborhood", but for a week that revolves around being a tourist and seeing theatre, I'd prefer being right at hand.

Some people stay in other areas and end up traveling to and from the theatre district/Times Square a lot -- especially at night. I'd rather stay there and spend my days traveling to other areas. Just a difference of opinion.

If you want to keep to a $100 budget, I don't think you'll do better than the Radio City Apartments.

I totally agree with Patrick. That $100/night deal is better than you will find anywhere IMO. The RC apts aren't glamorous but the location is so convenient for theater and tourists. If you want more of a neighborhood feel you will likely pay more and have to spend more on transportation. If I recall correctly, there's a subway stop right across from the apts.

Try www.jacksbandb.com
It's located in my favorite neighborhood-- the Upper West Side, with easy access to a few subway lines.

cts: My teen daughter and I stayed at Radio City Apartments and it fit our needs perfectly. You may want to do a search "Radio City Apartments" or click on my screen name to read my comments. Great location. I agree with Patrick. Stay IN the action and walk everywhere. We only used the subway to get to and from the airport. We were ok with the studio but may book the one bedroom next time. Enjoy your time with your daughter. My daughter and I have traveled to several destinations (Europe three times) and this last trip was right up there as being one of the best.

Thank you all so much for the feedback-it reinforced my initial inclination to focus on closeness to theater, some kind of kitchen facilities, price and good recommendations. Any additional suggestions of a convenient grocery-type store for our supplies-eggs, toast, fruit, soup, snacks? Nice close-by breakfast/lunch spots? I assume there are lots of restuarants for pre-show dinners-we're vegetarian and love ethnic food especially Thai & Indian.
What should we Californians do about footware for February-short boots, sturdy walking shoes or?
Any tips on getting backstage tours for Ave Q, or Wicked? What about wonderful Off-Broadways shows-we like edgy, funny, political, feminist among other stuff.
This site is so helpful-thank you!

The nearest grocery I think would be the Food Emporium at 810 Eight Ave &(49th St.) which is only a block away
Hours: Mon 7am - Sat 12mid
Sun 7am - 12mid
Phone: 212-977-1710

If you want to have a treat and are into food shopping, go to the Whole Foods Store in the new Time Warner building at Columbus Circle (it's about 10 blocks away) to stock up on fruit etc.

Let me introduce you to menupages.com It's a website where you can search for places by location and by type of cuisine. Since you're staying at west 49 st., places in the west 40s or west 50s would be convenient (on the home page you can choose).

Doing a quick search, these 3 places got good reviews and I believe it said they all deliver!

Bagel 54
Bagels, Sandwiches
265 W 54th St,   New York 10019
Phone: 212-956-2284

D&S Market Place
Delis, Sandwiches
34 W 56th St,   New York 10019
Phone: 212-265-3434

The Pump
Energy Food
Health Food, Sandwiches
40 W 55th St,   New York 10019
Phone: 212-246-6844

I happen to know west 55 st fairly well and there are a number of take out food places there that are good. La Bonne Soup is also there- a good option for lunch or a casual dinner. They have soup, omelettes, crepes, etc. and are not expensive. There's also an Indian on that block that I've never tried.

Amma is a good Indian on east 51 st (a 15+ min walk)but that would be in the wrong direction for the theater. I have also tried Utsav for Indian (6th ave b/w 46-47). They have a $13.95 lunch buffet (not sure how much of that would be vegetarian). It can get pricey for dinner.

Pulse is a place I haven't tried that is not that well known. It's inside Rockefeller Center (45 building) on the 3rd floor in a health club. It's pan asian/new American food and has a view of the ice rink I'm told.

For Thai, I like Siam Inn on 8th ave b/w 51-52 st. but the things I like are not vegetarian so don't know what their vegetarian fare is like.

For footware, I think comfort comes first. Something you can walk comfortably in during the day and preferably with a rubber sole or some sort of traction should there be snow. YOu can always buy boots etc. here.

There are no backstage tours of any Broadway shows to my knowledge. There are tours of Radio City Music Hall, the NBC studios (which are across the street from you at Rock Ctr.) and Lincoln Center. People here have said the Lincoln Center tour is great.

As to off Broadway, I haven't seen anything recently, but based on your request, I'd think about

>We're Still Hot (story of 4 women putting on a show for a 35th High School reunion)
>Doubt (great cast about a priest suspected of abuse at a Bronx school)
>Fat Pig (should a man continue dating his fat girlfriend)

There is also Menopause, the Musical. I also like the sound of 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee which has recently opened. I hear Forbidden Broadway, SVU is very good as is the Musical of Musicals. How long are you staying?

You might want to post a separate question on the off Broadway. There are a number of regular posters who will probably have some first hand recos but may not open this thread with the lodging title.
