Krampus Run/Buttmandl in Austria & Germany 12/5 & 12/6
Hi. I have found bits and pieces regarding the above celebrations in the Salzburg and Berchtesgaden areas in early December, I think it has to do with Saint Nicholas visiting the children to find out if they've been good throughout the year. Anyhow, I have not been able to get any definite information and as we will be staying in the Berchtesgaden area for a week in early December I'm trying to find out more definite info. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I've done searches but to no avail. Any help you can pass along would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm familiar with the Krampus character from my (Austrian) childhood, but know nothing of a "run", other than the info on the following link:

Hello
I went to school in Salzburg.The Krampus are individuals that dressup with large masks and have cow bells hanging off the. THe carry a bundle of thin wooden sticks. The run through the streets trying to catch people and hit people with their sticks. The reason they hit you as they are" to hit the evil out of you" The St.Nicholas comes along and passes out candy. It starts off with a parade. If you do go make sure that you have several layers of clothing as if the Krampus cathces you it can hurt. And later on in the night they still go chasing people. The thing is the people dressed up as Krampus get free beer at the bars. So when you hear the cow bells coming you run. It is a lot of fun.

Cynthia, if we were in Salzburg town would we be able to find this? Still a bit confused as to where one would need to be. Also, elberko, I'll check out the link you sent. Thanks again,

If you go to the old part of town - If you go on Getreidegasse you will not miss it. THat is the main street, I don't remember when it started I think late afternoon early evening -
