6-digit PIN, ATM Card/Credit Card

I've got an ATM/debit/Mastercard from Fleet bank. It has a 6-digit PIN, and I don't plan to bring it with me to Europe.

I've only used 4-digit PIN ATM/Debit/Credit cards in Europe. I've heard it said on this board not to bring a 6-digit PIN ATM card, whether it be ATM or Credit card, because they won't work.

Anybody have any experiences using a 6-digit PIN in ATM's in Europe? I'm asking this question for educational purposes only for me & other Fodorites who visit Europe.

I have a Fleet ATM with a 5 digit PIN and they told me to just enter the first 4 digits when in Europe. Tried that and it didn't work. BUT, the whole 5 digit PIN did work. Don't know for sure about 6 digit PINS but don't see why they'd be any different from 5 digit ones. I've used the card with the five digit PIN in numerous countries in Europe with no problem.

I can't recall where, but somewhere in the US I used my four digit PIN and the machine held out for six. I decided to add some zeroes, but I didn't know if they went on the front or the back; I was a little nervous as I suspect the machines are programmed to eat your card if you screw up the PIN enough times.
