cheap clean hotels in Maui?

We stayed at the Kihei Surfside Condos for $125/night with AAA discount (wasn't a huge discount though). It's not literally on the beach, but it's set next to the lava rocks right on the ocean and there's a short path that takes like half a minute to get to Keawakapu Beach, an awesome beach, wide, snorkeling, soft sand. The condos were quiet, clean inside, ours was one bedroom/one bath (but I know there's other types there) with a full kitchen and a lanai that overlooked the property's enormous lush lawn with an expansive view of the ocean and neighbor islands...we slept on the sofa bed so we could enjoy the awesome breezes and wake up every morning to see Maui out there. And it's designed so every room has a view.
It's not really in Kihei, it's past all the noise and congestion of Kihei to the start of Wailea, it's very quiet around there. We loved it and would go back in an instant. It really is a little gem. Let me know if you have any questions!

Aloha, Roxy. Regarding #1....isn't Keawakapu Beach amazing??? It's one of my favorite beaches.
Regarding #2.......hhhmmm, seeing that you were actually sitting on Maui, what you were probably looking at every morning was Kaho'olawe. Still part of Maui county but different island.
Regarding #3...........Actually, these condos ARE really in Kihei. They maybe close to the border of Wailea/Kihei but Wailea has a diferent caliber of resort/condo properties.

Not sure what your definition of "cheap is. However, the words 'inexpensive', 'Maui', and 'on the beach' just don't go together, sorry. If you want to be in a beachfront property....you're going to pay for it. That said......you could try the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel right on Ka'anapali Beach! The hotel is older, very Hawaiian, nice friendly staff and shares the beach with the heavy hitting resorts....Hyatt, Westin, Marriotts & Sheraton. If you want to go the condo route.....try the Whalers on the same beach. Reasonably priced condos on the same stretch of beach.

Inexpensive is a very relative term. We were just at the Sheraton on Kaanapali, and got a room for $ 228 for 5 nites with the 5th nite free. Starwood ran their usual 35% off, so if you call you have to ask for "specials." The $ 228 was after the 35% off. So I think that comes out to be around $ 180/nite. We just loved the place too.

Pretty much what Kolohegirl said however if you want to stay on Lahaina/Kaanapali side, you simply can not do better than Makai Inn. It is situated on the north end of Lahaina and the ocean views are to die for.

It is at least half the price of Kaanapali and furnished nicer. Suzy and Trav never stop working on the place and they simply know everybody who is anybody and more in Lahaina. Trav jr runs handsdown the best wine store in the state. You could tell them I sent you but then you don't know my name.

The Royal Lahaina is clean and perfectly located on the Kaanapali Beach. I got it for $90 per night for ocean view. It also has the advantage of being next door to the Whaler's Village and a $1 buss ride to Lahaina. There are very good deals to be had there and the bottom line is that you're not in Maui to hang out in your room anyway.

The Royal Lahaina isn't next door to Whaler's Village. Between the two are the Sheraton, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, and The Whaler condo. It is about a 15 to 20 minute walk from Royal Lahaina to Whaler's Village.

Have stayed twice at Noelani Condos in Kahana, north of Kaanapali, we liked it a lot (Studio & kitchen $107/nt typ. with AAA(***rated) discount). It's right on the (rocky)shore,high tide is very close ! It's an excellent setting for views, sunsets etc. Small place with nice management.

Yes, technically the Kihei Surfside is in Kihei, but what I was trying to say is that it FEELS miles away from the bustling, noisy Kihei strip, being that it's several minutes from all that and surrounded by houses. No, it's not part of the Wailea development area, all that master planned stuff, and no, it's certainly not Grand Wailea caliber, but geez, for the money, you can't do any better, it's a great freakin' place, friendly, clean, well kept, and inexpensive, and on a wonderful beach.
Re: "seeing Maui out there"...geez, you know what I meant. From our balcony, we could see Lanai and Molokai, from the beach and our lawn, we could see Kahoolawe, Molokini, and Lanai--wonderful views! We stood in awe everytime we turned toward the ocean!
The point is, I think that unless ezoid is looking to stay in the Kaanapali area, this condo fits the bill perfectly, straddling the very un-islandy feel of the heart of Kihei and the extreme upscale-ness of Wailea.

From what I read on tripadvisor.com, the Royal Lahaina is a very scary place. It sounds like a dump. We have never been in it, but have been on the shuttle when they were picking people up. It looked OLD and decrepid!

We just got back from Maui yesterday. We stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Yes, it's an older hotel but very clean. The staff is extremely nice. Its on a nice large stretch of Kaanapali beach. If we ever get a chance to go back to Maui we will stay there again. We had a garden view which was fine for us since we were never in our room during the day. At night we would open the patio door and could still hear the ocean.
