Lisa - I still have the timetable from my trip (about a month ago) - my train left Munich at 9:25 AM and was scheduled to arrive at Vienna (Westbahnhof) at 2:20 PM - in reality it was about 20 minutes late. Different trains may have slightly different timeframes, but that should give you an idea.

The shortest scheduled travel time from Munich to Vienna is the one already mentioned: 4 hours and 55 minutes, if on time. This particular routing requires no changes of train.
The next shortest times are scheduled for 5 hours, 13 minutes with a change in Salzburg. The change in Salzburg on some of the connections will force you to hustle a little; you have 9 minutes if the trains are on time. Should be enough. The no change option is probably perferable. However, the Salzburg train station is not a huge, rambling place like some of them.

The change in Salzburg is across a platform, and of course frontier checks have gone. If at Munich airport station or main station you book your seats the computer gives you seats in cars that face each other across the platform in Salzburg. The trains have buffet cars or restaurant cars.

Welcome to Europe.

Ben Haines, London
