Just Returned from St Vincent/Bequia

Hi, recently vacationed in St Vincent and Bequia and islands south. Had a blast. Learned a lot about primitive situations in St Vincent (downtown Kingstown) and it was a great adventure.

Chartered a Catamaran and sailed for a week after an initial couple of days in rooms/motels/villas.

Let me know where to send email summary. I tried to place it on this site but it apparently was too large.

Great time and great people! Don

I'd love to get a summary of your trip. My husband & I just got back from Virgin Gorda & loved it. For our next trip, I'd be interested in finding out about the beaches at St. V & Bequia. How do they rate in comparision to the rest of the Caribbean if you can say? Thanks!

Hi Marta,

Well, if you've been in Virgin Gorda, you will love Bequia. It's like Virgin Gorda but with less "ostentatiousness." More laid back. Very pretty, more indigenous people and all of them friendly and having pride in their island.

Lots of ferries to nearby islands and at little cost to get there.

Kingstown, on the other hand, is an adventure. This is the capital of a country which has not catered to tourist trade and has a considerable lower standard of living than Bequia. No real danger in St Vincent to tourists but it can be intimidating to see so many people living "on the edge" of poverty or in it.

For our group (mostly younger adults and more males than females) there was no fear for wellbeing. And, in fact, we came across a single young attractive female walking down the street at night and came to find out she was with the Peace Corps and she took us in for the rest of the night - great fun.

So, I'm not really familiar with the areas beyond Kingstown but my "take" is that it is a lot poorer than Virgin Gorda and it might be less comfortable to roam about. Bequia, on the other hand, is the best of many worlds and my only fear in recommending it is the fact that too many may go there! Then, it becomes the Virgin Gorda of the Grenadines! Yikes, the last time I was in Virgin Gorda, there were Cruise Ships dumping hundreds of "brillo heads" onto the beaches of the Baths!

Hope that never happens to Bequia! don

Don,
Would love to have a summary also - I have been gathering info on Bequia and the Grenadines for the last year. While we are going to Virgin Gorda/Anegada this May, I'm already thinking about next year!!
Thanks, Jamie

May I suggest that those who wish only to request a trip report from don do so by emailing him.
