NEEDED: hotels in Tallinn, Estonia

I haven't been to Tallinn, but some months ago, I requested the same info on this forum. I am going to Riga, Latvia for a month this summer, and thought of visiting Tallinn for a few days. I wish I could remember the name of the person who replied to me, but unfortunately I don't. However, she recommended the Hotel Viru. She had stayed at that hotel and said that it was good. Hope this helps.

I stayed at the Hotel Viru in August 2 years ago. It was $100 for a double for 2 nights, including breakfast and I loved it. From the window of our room we could see the walls of the Old Town. Cross the street, and we were there. Talinn is remarkable: tour the town hall, Estonian Maritime Museum (at "Fat Margaret" tower), cathedrals and castle. We stumbled upon a chamber music program of Mozart, Tubin and Tobias performed by members of the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra, free, in St. Mary's cathedral (13th C). Can't say enough about it - hope you go, and enjoy!

This past Friday's (6/11/04) USA Today Life's section has a 1-page article on Tallinn (within a 3-page article on Tallinn, Vilnius & Riga). The article has a few suggestions for lodging.

I can also put in a word for Reval Hotel Olümpia. It also sports a very nice rooftop sauna and pool. Reval Hotels is an Estonian hotel chain and their properties (at least the 4 star ones) are somewhat "marriottish", if you catch my drift. Pretty pleasant, although not too personal.
Another option in this range might be the three-year-old Radisson, which sometimes offers quite attractive rates.
Elina's suggestion of the Domina Hotels should not disappoint you either, although I have not stayed at them personally.
In the top range there is Grand Hotel Schlössle right in the center of Old Town and its sister property (a little less upscale) Hotel St. Petersbourg. Both are comparatively small and intimate properties that cater a little bit more for the individual traveller.

I think I ought to tell you where I stayed, since it was excellent. It was odd, because really it is a restaurant, and for example there are no morning staff till the restaurant opens at noon, so you cannot check in early. But it is clean, modern, cheap, and set right there in the top town, five minutes walk above the central city square, and fifteen minutes, chiefly by stairs, above the railway station. The In Your Pocket note is this
Olematu Rüütel: This tiny guesthouse attached to the Non-existent Knight restaurant offers the only real accommodation amidst the spectacular mansions and historic government offices of Toompea hill. Rooms aren?t sparkling, but they?re decent enough considering their location and price. The two double rooms share shower and WC. Extra bed 80kr. Breakfast 30k or 2 euros, 2 doubles at 650 k or 42 euros, one suite at 800 k or 51 euros

I admit that both Olumpia and Viru have better breakfasts than the Domina hotels. It is just me, I don't really eat breakfast, so that plays no role when I choose a hotel.
Olematu that Ben Haines just mentioned is in a great, peaceful location, yet near everything.

since rooms were tight we ended up at the Reval Express which is cheap clean and has walls of paper. The hotel is right next to the pier which was great since most of our trip revolved around taking ferries everywhere. There were hundreds of kids here so we didnt leep at all. I dont think I would reommend this location otherwise!
