New York in 5 days

Planning on going to New York in Jan or Feb 18 just for 5 days and would like recommendations on the best things to do in that amount of time? Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Why not go someplace a little warmer in January or February?
After NYE in Times Square, the city quiets down for awhile IMO.

Because that's what people mean when they say "New York"... the city itself.

If they wanted to go to Buffalo, they would have said so.

So what kinds of things do you like to do? I'd first recommend you get a good guidebook so you can get an overview and understand what choices you have. Then make an informed decision after reading something from someone who knows a bit about the city. There's a lot to do in NYC in 5 days, so I can't hazard a guess unless you can convey a bit about the experience you are looking for.

Just seeing the city in general. I went in mid January, and enjoyed it because lines were short and it wasn’t an expensive time to go. 5 Days is very little time- google attractions, you’ll fill your time up fast.

The Westminster dog show is mid February and that is something a few relatives would probably kill to attend but i am thinking you’d be unlikely to be interested in that.

You'll probably want to list some of your interests if you hope to get good recommendations.

For example, too often here someone says, "Give me your recommendations." Then someone else responds, "You should see the [X] exhibit at the [Y] museum." Then the OP responds, "Oh, we don't like museums." (Groan)

Look: Fodors responders are not travel agents, we're volunteering our time and experience to help you. To do so, we need to know what you like to do. We also need to know if it's you, you and a kid, you and a paramour, you and your family, which generations and the varying interests of the people who will be traveling. Without that information, the basic advice for big cities like NYC - "Look at Fodors' itinerary suggestions" - is all we can do.

No, but I'm psychic. Or at least I can understand a simple request when I read one.

If you like history, the Tenement Museum is fascinating. I was very sorry I only had time to do one tour.

If you like plays, see a Broadway show.

There are several walking tours offered; my favorite was the walking tour of Central Park.

Having gone to high school there, I know that would be my first choice. My second would be seeing German tourists sunbathe in Central Park in a Speedo.

We like to go to NYC in Jan. or Feb. Hotel prices are good. We go for ballet and museums and restaurants.
