Hello...I am travelling solo to Paris mid May 2018 and later early June as a 50's female. I would be grateful for any suggestions of suitable accommodation on a shoestring budget. Hostels are a last resort! If you happen to be there also...maybe we can meet up.

What does "shoestring budget" mean? 20 Euros/night? 80 Euros/night?

Go on Booking.com and see what you can get for whatever budget you have. Use the map feature to see where places are. Of course, you'll pay more for a better location, generally.

It is on Blvd Haussmann fairly close to Musee Jacquemont-Andre and a quick walk to Galeries Lafayette. Not a whole lot of action in the immediate area but the hotel was clean, included breakfast delivered to your room and was very inexpensive. The website currently shows rooms as low as 60euro. I have rarely, if ever, seen anyone recommend it on this forum, but I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.

I stayed twice at Hotel St. Pierre when I was a solo budget traveler. I loved the location. Rooms were small but workable. Staff was friendly.

Great neighborhood in the southern fringes of the 5th. Clean, comfortable, very helpful staff. They have rooms with en suite baths, which is what we got, but they have very inexpensive rooms with shared bath. I would have been fine with that, but my husband nixed it. I did notice lines for the shared showers in the morning, but when I've stayed in hostels I just take my shower in off-peak hours. You had to buy tokens to use the shower, and they gave you a certain number of minutes.

Your responses so far show how much range "budget" can cover. Port Royal Hotel, modernized in recent years, costs twice as much as the hotel near Villette, which is a modern building belonging to Europe's biggest hotel chain. One key factor is distance. Port Royal hotel is a moderate walk to the banks of the Seine. The Villette hotel is just inside the ring road which marks the city core and so almost anywhere (except the fun Villette area itself) will require a lengthy Metro ride. That's the classic trade-off: More convenient = more expensive.

I don't know what your budget is, but the Ibis chain is nice and reliable, and there are several in fairly central locations. TImhotel is another budget chain with a lot of locations in Paris. I've stayed many times in the Ibis Bastille Opera, which is within easy walking distance of the Marais and almost next to a nice street market. I've also stayed at the Timhotel in Montmartre. These will provide you with reliable, modern accommodations in small rooms with limited hotel services. But if you are looking for something with charm, they won't fit the bill.

Frankly, I'd rather pay 100 euros and stay in Central Paris than 80 euros and stay a long way out (even in La Defense). But that's really up to you. But you will have choices if your budget can go up to 100 euros.

While renting an apartment in Paris at the moment is fraught, do explore Airbnb for a private room in an occupied apartment. I suspect you'll get much more on a small budget than looking for a hotel.

I agree with the above, Airbnb does always seem to work out better for value for money.

People who are on such a budget that they consider hostels to be a viable option if absolutely necessary are probably not looking for 100 euro hotel rooms, and if this is a single traveler, I very much doubt that renting an apartment falls into the budget limits, particularly in a central area of Paris.

Once again we have been provided with insufficient details about the person's priorities and are just fantasizing about what we ourselves would do.

I dearly hope that Coco7717 will give us a bit of feedback so that no one's time will be wasted and that we do not start our usual jousting about the best place to be and how she should spend her money.

"Shoestring budget." Have the rest of you noticed this detail?

I agree Ibis hotels are generally not too expensive, but I suspect they are more expensive than this person wants as they aren't really that cheap and not for a shoestring budget.

ONe of the cheapest hotels I know in central Paris is the Hotel du Commerce, as it even has some rooms without private bath. Great location. I have no personal experience. It's only a 1* hotel, you can get rooms from 50 euro in May.

The Ibis Budget hotels we sometimes stay at when we have business in Sarlat or Périgueux or Bordeaux are 39,95 euros a night for a double. I don't know if they are more expensive in Paris, but I do know that in most big cities they have several locations, many of them convenient to downtown areas.

Just checked.. if you book on their website the non refundable rate for a random date I checked at the Hotel St Pierre is 99 euros per night.. 104 per night for a refundable rate.
The location really makes this hotel ideal for a solo traveler.. very central to many sights, cafes, restaurants, the river, bus and metro lines etc.

Who 100 euros you get an excellant location.. worth a lot to me if you are only staying a few days. I have walked to many sites from there , so barely spent a dime on transport .

Yes airbnb may be your cheapest option but heed many warnings here about the individual airbnb being properly registered with city as many are and many are not.

I hear kerouac now has an airbnb room he lets out? But that's in a dicey remote area!

Actually, I just rented an apartment for two weeks in Havana (returned on Monday), and it was done in such a casual and non contractual way that most of the people here would not sleep at night if they knew the details.
