Where would be a good place to stay for a few months in a cool climate in Mexico.

Also, does anyone have an ideas on rentals in Mexico in a cool climate. The costs of renting a place, is what I’m interested in.

When you say cool climate, can we assume during the US summer months? If so, places to consider, in no particular order would be Patzcuaro, San Cristobal De Las Casas, Guanajuato, San Miguel De Allende, Puebla and Mexico City. All are at 6500 feet asl or higher and quite pleasant summer climates. You can probably figure rents anywhere from $300 to $2000+ US monthly for a short term rental, depending on whether you want just a private room or an entire house, big city, small city, how close you want to be to touristy stuff, etc. VRBO, Craigslist, and AirB&B are good resources for what rents might go for, whether you rent through them or not. Be aware that the 'best' rentals are rarely found online, but rather by boots on the ground. And that the summer months in such areas is not the low season as would be the case along the coasts.

I rent a quality 1 bedroom apartment including WiFi & all utilities in one of the best areas of Gunajuato for under $250 US a month. It has a private bath, 2 balconies, washer/dryer, living room, and kitchen.
In fact I eat out at least one meal a day spending less than $800 US total last season with the weak peso exchange rate.

I'm not sure of the costs, but I'll second baldones recommendation of San Cristobal de las Casas.

Thank you all for the great information. I think you are right, baldone when you say boots on the ground is the best way.

And I'd be remiss in not mentioning Zacatecas. At 8,000 feet, it's high, dry and cool, and arguably has the most beautiful colonial architecture apart from Puebla and Mexico City.

As above, it would be the colonial cities that are at altitude for what you are looking for (of which I have zero personal experience with because I prefer hotter weather and a beach)... beauty with lower temps.

Which "few months" of the year are you asking about?

It isn't an issue of being a colonial city, it's the location. There are certainly colonial cities in Mexico that are hot, like Merida, but the cooler areas are in the central highlands. Oaxaca is pretty hot in summer, also, and it's a colonial city, so is Veracruz and Campeche and they are hot.
