Safety in Belize
We are considering to travel to Belize at the end of January 2018. The couple who is joining us are worried about the safety in that country. Also does anybody has experienced traveling with a rental car in Belize?

Parts of Belize City are not safe but most tourists only pass through during daylight hours with no problems. Whether renting a car is a good idea or not depends on where you're staying - with some itineraries it wouldn't save money or give you more flexibility and some places - like the islands - you wouldn't need it.

Most visitors report feeling a high degree of personal safety and welcomeness on the part of Belizeans. We have a few main paved highways and most attractions are off road, so get 4wd so you can access more remote areas, and return

We have never felt unsafe in Belize. We rented a car on our last trip and found it to be no problem. We arrived on a Sunday, so there was very little traffic outside of Belize City. On the roads off the main highway, we had to dodge potholes because we were staying near Corozal during sugar cane harvest, so the gravel roads were quite beat up. We rented from Crystal Auto Belize.

We felt safe everywhere we've stayed - San Ignacio, Ambergris, and the Lamanai Outpost Lodge; our driver told us to avoid certain parts of Belize City at night. We were offered drugs on Ambergris, but just said no and moved on. It was from a guy on a bike - didn't seem threatening.
