Zambia in 2017

I have many posts and travel reports here about Zambia. Thank you, Kota especially. We are going to both Namibia and Zambia on this trip to Africa. We have previously been to Botswana ten years ago, In Zambia we will stay briefly at Victoria Falls and go to Lower Zambezi National Park and South Luangnwa National Park. Since there are so many camps in SLNP, I am having a hard time deciding where to stay. I think we will have 6 nights in this park. We like to stay in small tented bush camps in less busy areas. We can go on water and some talking adventures, but we would mostly like to do vehicle guided rides.
Help me choose two camps !

Flatdogs. Thornicroft,Bilimungwe,Chamilandu,Chikoko Trails,Chindeni,
Kuyenda Bushcamp, Mwamba Bush Camp,Track and Trail River Camp,Wildlife Camp, each priced differently depending on the lux levels.

The water( the river) is the exclusive property of the hippos and the crocs,so going on it?? ..no,no.

Talking about adventures-yes.

Walking safaris- yes.

Hello zinfanatic, thanks for the shout out! Inquest made some good suggestions, but please allow me to elaborate. Flatdogs is a nice camp, but located near the main entrance to the park; Mfuwe gate. Thus, this area gets quite busy. Same goes for Thornicroft. At Bushcamp Company (BCC camps) such as Bilimungwe, Chamilandu and Kuyenda, they don’t always offer you the option to game drive as they focus much on walking and may not have enough guides on staff to offer walking v. driving options. Luxury isn’t synonymous with pricing in South Luangwa – for example, Tafika drives very high premiums for the experience, but the accommodations are rather rustic.

If you prefer to stay in remote area, away from the main Mfuwe gate, and have great activity options in smaller camps, I suggest you look at Tena Tena first. Robin Pope Safaris (RPS) has enough guides on staff to always offer a game drive option shall you not feel like a walk. I am also a big fan of Tafika (owned and operated by John Coppinger), Kaingo (by Dereck Shenton) and Mchenja (Norman Carr Safaris [NCS]). I particularly like the owner operated ones! If you are seeking something a bit more budget conscious, the two best options in SLNP are Lion Camp and Chichele (albeit a bit odd in look and feel). Note that Lion Camp is currently closed for refurb.

As Inquest mentioned, the River is not for activities unlike Lower Zambezi National Park LZNP in which the Zambezi River is one of the focal points of activities. In LZNP, you should look at Chiawa, Old Mondoro, Sausage Tree, Potato Bush, Anabezi and Amanzi. Anabezi and Amanzi are offering a stellar pay 2, stay 3 special which makes these two options exceptional value for money.

I hope this helps. Enjoy Zambia!

Sincerely,
Kota Tabuchi – Managing Director: Africa – Travel Beyond
