We presently have 2 rooms booked at the Munich Marriott Hotel Wed-Sun in early Sept. for husband&wife and 25 year old son. Paying 250E for 2 nights and 318E 2 nights. I don't want to pay more than 350-400E per nightl.

Someone recommended the Motel One near Marienplatz and it had nice reviews on several sites but one of the nights we needed was booked. So inexpensive.

It sounds like being near Marienplatz is ideal. We do want to be in a hotel, not apartment. I do want separation from my son.

There is another MotelOne at the Munich East station, a three minutes S-Bahn ride from the Marienplatz.

I am looking at these two hotels and would appreciate a comparison of pros and cons of their locations. I want quiet yet convenient to public transport or easy walking to the the sights. We will arrive from Berlin by train, take a train to Salzburg one day and take public transport to the airport.

macross-nice option but already booked. Fodors Guide says it has no air-conditioning. Do you think AC be an ncecssity in early Sept?

Dukey1-I had already looked at their location but my hope was that someone very familiar w/ Munich could give more insight on the character of the surrounding neighborhood, what the walk is like to the public transport or to the city center on foot, etc. Since my orginal posting, I've been reading more reviews. Here are some excerpts from a few from Tripadvisor: "Pretty seedy area, between all the strip bars, hookers in doorways, and filthy streets" "the area seems a bit seedy" "The location is not awesome-although I never felt unsafe (it felt like "Little Turkey" with a few sex shops thrown in for extra personality), but you had to walk through it about ten minutes to get to either the main shopping area/Residence/glockenspiel."
But to be fair, there were many nice things said about the Courtyard as well.

The Marriott Munich is described as "Modern hotel in the bohemian district of Schwabing, walking distance to the 'English Garden' and an excerpt from a TA review said this:
"The location is on the outskirts but within a 5 minute walk to the subway. You are about 6-7 stops away from the popular Marienplatz. You have to take a taxi or subway to get to any restaurants as there is nothing in the area."

I am paying 250E per night for 2 room for 2 weekend nights and 318E per for 2 room for weekday nights. I am willing to go 400-500E per night total for 2 rooms. Going to search a little further.

We liked Hotel Splendid Dollman which is about 10 min walk to marienplatz and across the street from the tram and the U-bahn. Quiet yet convenient neighborhood. However, in September you might want to book a hotel with A/C just to be on the safe side. Probably mostly cloudy days and with a good chance of rain...but you never know. Check the prices at the Maximillian.

I can recommend Hotel Blauer Bock. My husband and I were there in October 2015. It is right across the street from Viktualienmarkt and around the corner from Marienplatz. It was probably the biggest room we have ever stayed in while in Europe. A full breakfast was included. It was very reasonably priced. I walked from the hotel to Marienplatz alone a couple times and felt very comfortable.

Hi foodforfrance- If you have 2 rooms booked for 2 nights at the Marriott Munich at Berliner Strasse 93 for a total of 250 € grab it!! However, I think you are talking about paying 125 € per room per night. This is still a pretty good deal for that hotel. Does that price include breakfast? Wifi?
Yes, there are not many restaurants nearby, but the food in the hotel's restaurant is pretty good and the food in the Champions bar , which is part of the hotel, is more than adequate. The hotel is only 6 stops (about 10 to 15 minutes) away from the Marienplatz via the Number 6 UBahn which runs every 10-15 minutes. The Ubahn station is 3-4 blocks from the hotel.
If you are attached to the Marriott chain, there is a Courtyard and a Residence Inn about 4 blocks from the East Bahnhof at Orleansstrasse 81-83. They share one dining room /bar/restaurant. Tram 19 stops less than a block away and passes within 2 blocks of the Hofbrau Haus which is within a few blocks of the Marienplatz. The rates may be lower there and the rooms are typical Marriott. And don't be put off by the neighborhood around the Hauptbahnhof- It certainly doesn't hold a candle to the area around the Frankfurt Hbf or the red light districts in Paris or Amsterdam.

The Marriott is indeed in a rather bland business park-style neighborhood. Not "dangerous", but boring. Nothing around - but some people don't mind as it's really just a short hop by subway to central Schwabing (lots of restaurants, pubs, etc. - around Münchner Freiheit subway stop) or to the historic city center.
And it's popular with business travellers due to its proximity to the Middle Ring road and several major corporations which have their seat in walking distance.

The Courtyard is closer to the historic city center, but the immediate neighborhood is not the quaintest. I would not go so far to call it "seedy". Night clubs etc. are nothing to worry about. And it's far from being a real red light district.

The Motel One location near Sendlinger Tor is the most popular and often booked out. Other locations do not offer walking distance to Marienplatz, but are still not far from Marienplatz - and closer to restaurants, shops etc. than the Marriott in Schwabing-North.

Motel One City West is on Landsberger Str. - at first glance a busy and not too appealing thoroughfare. But the residential area of Schwanthalerhöhe has tons of eateries, restaurants, cafes etc in very short walking distance. There is a tram stop nearby, takes 10 minutes to Marienplatz. Taxi from "downtown" is appr. €10. Augustiner beer hall is just down the street - 5min on foot.

Clarkgriswold-The Hotel Splendid Dollman is a very nice property, but I do want ac, so no deal there. The Maximilian is a nice option. They don't appear to have a the ideal for us twin suite available for 295E, but I have emailed them anyway.

travelsforbeer-Thank you for giving me a detailed description of the areas around the MMH and CMCC. Rate I am paying at MMH includes both rooms: 250E for 2 nights and 318E 2 nights, but no breakfast and I would get wifi for me a rewards member. I really want to book elsewhere and if I stayed w/ Marriott (no, not attached to the chain) I would go with Residence East Bahnof location.

Dukey1-I did check it out based on all the Fodorites who rec'd it. It appears for 2 rooms to suit our needs based on what they have available would be 556E/night. No single rooms available for my son to get the price lower.

clarkgriswold-Maximillian just responded with a twin suite for 435E per night. Have you stayed here? Great reviews on TA, Booking.com

Sorry the Platzl doesn't work for you. I do think you are wise to try to stay close to public transport and as to the Marienplatz, yeah it's great but once you've seen it, you've seen it. There are so many other places, sights, neighborhoods, etc., in the city which I am certain you'll find memorable.

Dukey1-me too. Platzl is a really nice option. I have settled on Maximilian. 2 br/2 ba apartment 435E/nt. It will be nice to sit together in our livingroom and visit after long days of sightseeing. You gave me many good options but I was just too late changing my mind on The Marriott Munich (which appears to be a popular hotel w/ business folks and those using their points) to get reservations. AFter more research I realized I would be happier closer in........walking distance to Marienplatz.

It sounds like your decision has been made but I will still chime in. Just 2 weeks ago we stayed at Motel One near the East train station. There is a tram literally right outside the hotel and it will take you to the Marienplatz. I don't think we ever waited more than 5 minutes for the tram. The rooms are small but adequate. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. Overall we thought it was a good value.

If this info doesn't help the OP then I hope it will help someone else.

I appreciated this discussion as I was hunting for a place to stay in Munich for 4 nights in late October.

Thanks Cowboy and P_M for the info on Motel One. I saw these in Berlin earlier this year and was curious. For now I have booked at the one on Landsberger Str. They didn't require my credit card since I will arrive well before 6pm, and the room rate is 84E double per night (9.5E pp extra for breakfast).

Any restaurant recs nearby would be great appreciated as well!
