Vignettes and Umwelplakettes

I'll be driving a rental car in France during the first part of my trip, and a different rental car in Switzerland, Austria and Germany during another part of the trip.

I've read that I can just pay for the French tolls on the road, and do not need a vignette... is that correct?

During the second part of my trip, I'll be renting a car in Switzerland, and driving through Austria, then returning it in Munich (yes, I know there are international drop-off fees). So does the Swiss rental car agency likely only provide me with Swiss vignettes (not the Austrian and German one too)? In which case, can I just buy the Austrian vignette at the border? Where would I buy the environmental sticker (the Umweltplakette) needed for Munich if I'm renting the car in Switzerland? Do rental agencies in Switzerland have these for sale? Or do they have to be bought in Germany?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

FYI, the rental car reservations are through AutoEurope, if this makes a difference? The reservation notes that I'm picking up in Lucerne and dropping off in Munich. So not sure then if the local Swiss rental agency will be able to provide the Umweltplakette?

Typically rental car companies will provide vignettes for the country in which you are renting the car, though be certain to ask when you pick up the car (especially in Switzerland, where the only vignette option is the annual one at €40). There are no vignettes needed for Germany; for Austria, you will have opportunities near the border to purchase the sticker (cash only). Be certain to affix the sticker on your windscreen immediately in Austria according to the picture on the back (usually top center or lower right). The instructions will be written in English and German.

That is correct.

The French Autoroute system is operated by a number of different entities and the credit cards that anyone company accepts may be different than what a second company accepts.

I always use cash when paying tolls to preclude problems.

Are you sure you need an umweltplakette for dropping off the car in Munich? You should check that carefully. The drop off may not be in the umweltzone. There are maps online showing exactly where the umweltzone is.
You can ask when you pick up the car if it has an umweltplakette already, and if not where you can get one if you need it. You normally need to present registration documents to obtain one, which of course you won't have, but a brand dealer maybe able to provide you with one.

Thank you all for your help.

Yes, hetismij2, I'll have the car at my hotel for 2 days and the hotel is on Maxmilianstrasse. And then we return it to the airport.

It's the Umweltplakette for Germany that concerns me, not so much the vignettes for Austria and Switzerland.
