Budapest Day Trip Recommendation
Hello fellow travelers,
We are a family of four (two parents and two young adult children 20, 21), considering one of two day trips outside Budapest: Danube River Bend or Eger? In either case, we would use a private guide for the tour.
Which should we take, unfortunately we only have time for one?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Gus

Eger is lovely with the high point either the valley of virgins (for wine, really) or the university tower. Catch a train, take in a spa. You might like to try a spa in a cave or in a field (loads of options). The bend? what happens there?
Private guide, nah.
Have you thought of a tour to Tokaji and hire a wine guide there?

We enjoyed a walking food tour in Budapest with Taste Hungary very much, they were fantastic. They also offer various tours outside the city - I remember Eger being one of a few to choose from. Small group sizes.

Another option is the beautiful town of Szentendre which is only a 40 min train ride from Budapest (A riverside boat is another option during the spring/summer months) I was just there in December and it is a wonderful Danube riverside town with some beautiful, colorful buildings and plenty of restaurants, cafes, small museums, walks along the Danube and plenty of hiking options.

If you have not yet chosen a private guide I suggest Bela Lukacs. I learned about him from this very forum and he was perfect for off-the-beaten-path. He was extremely knowledgable, spoke excellent English, gave us the insider experience we wanted and drove us in his own car to unforgettable places outside the city. It has been a few years now but I recently tracked him down for a friend who is planning a river cruise. He is still at it. In Budapest, try M restaurant and visit the Terror Haza museum.

Best trip I took in Hungary was to the Tokaj region--and specifically the small village of Mad (where we saw the fabulous Baroque synagogue, Jewish cemetery, and ate a privately prepared meal at a tiny vineyard).
The first time I went with Taste of Hungary. I thought their prices were ridiculous so I repeated the trip on my own by train.

This is not to everyone's taste, but if you're interested in history, you might like to visit the statue park.
The statues are all relics of the Communist period--Stalin, Lenin, Marx, etc.
We were in Budapest so briefly that we didn't have time to see it, but I'd love to go back and spend a few hours there.

I second Peg's Momento Park suggestion, we loved it and the secret police training video they run on loop inside the trailer-museum. It pairs well with a commie walking tour inside Budapest (a highlight for us), as well as the House of Terror museum.
