How to reach Porec from Milan and other questions

We are going to be in Milan for the Grand Prix in Monza on 09/04. On 09/05 we'd like to start a second leg of our trip. I'm looking at a few different bike tours in Istria, they all appeal to me for different reasons. Answers to a few specific questions might help me zero in on a plan.

- I'm having trouble posting so I'm going to try to paste into a reply to this post.

Welp, this forum is bunk. Nothing works. Not even my tags as this is supposed to be in Italy and Croatia too. Anyhow, if anyone happens to see this in the SLOVENIA forum that can direct me on the best way to reach Porec from Milan please let me know. Travel would be on September 5 2016.

Does anyone work here? Here as in Fodors? I went to the help section and loads of people are complaining about the same problem for months. And crickets....

I would think you could take a train from Milan to Trieste, and then a bus from Trieste to Porec.

Many knowledgeable posters only check the board once a day, but you are tagged for Croatia and Italy, so you should get some responses if you exercise a bit of patience. ;-)

Also, you might check the Rough Guide -- it usually provides excellent coverage of transportation options.

Its a bit of a trek, but train to Trieste and then bus to Porec as kja suggests is probably the best way.

You might spend a night or two in Trieste just to break it up a bit (and see Trieste.)

Here's the bus schedule - the schedule may change for September 5 but it will give you an idea.

If you haven't been to Venice, you could go there on the train, spend a night or two, then catch the bus to Rovinj. From Rovinj catch another bus to Porec. Rovinj is worth a visit but, maybe your bike tour will visit Rovinj.

Your post is tagged Italy, Croatia and Slovenia in the europe forum. There is no separate forum for each country - only for each continent except for north america.

Yes thankfully the tags are showing up now, when it first posted only Slovenia was showing up.

Thank you for the replies. Train the bus is an awfully long journey and I'd probably like to break it up.

Is it possible to fly Milan to Pula then ferry to Porec? Or train Milan to Venice then ferry to Porec?

I hope this posts. I sure wish I could post my whole inquiry of related info & questions.

"I sure wish I could post my whole inquiry of related info & questions."

Try it! If it doesn't work, paste back and forth from a word file until you find the problem elements and then write around it.

-Is it possible to fly Milan to Pula then ferry to Porec?-

You could fly Milan to Pula, then take a bus to Porec, but its not a direct flight and would definitely not save you any time.

-Or train Milan to Venice then ferry to Porec?-

Sure but you might have to spend a couple of nights in Venice because of the ferry schedule. 2016 is not up yet but you can get an idea here.

I tried for 30 minutes already. I removed links, acronyms, dates, etc. Gave up. Maybe since my tags have now appeared that means the bug is lifted, for the time being at least. I will try again in a little while.

I seriously doubt that the bug is gone. You need to test your post t bit by bit.

And don't miss rialtogrl's response from about the same time you and I were posting.

Yes I see rialtogirl's response Thanks r.g.

Kja, rialtogirl & others, I'm looking at a 4 night bike tour that starts in Trieste then continues on to Piran & Umag before ending in Porec. The good: it departs from Trieste which is easier to get to than Porec (where the other tours I'm looking at depart from). The bad: they only have Thursday departures which gives me a gap of 3 days to kill in Trieste. I know it takes a half day+ to travel & it would actually leave me with more like 2.25 days in Trieste but I'm just not terribly interest in Trieste.

Another tour I'm looking is just 3 nights, starting in Porec, continuing to Rovinj and ending in Pula. This one also has only Thursday departures. The good: if I'm going to have that gap time I'd rather have it in Porec than Trieste. The bad: the difficulty getting to Porec.

The other tour on the table is 7 nights, departing from Porec. The good: it has daily departures, it includes dips into inland Istria with overnights in Buje and Motovun (eliminating the need for us to head to that area for a few nights after the tour with a car, which we would do with the shorter strictly coastal tours), and I like that we don't move bases every single day but have one 3 day stay and one 2 day stay. The bad: the difficulty getting to Porec. As well, not sure how we'd get from Rovinj (ending point of tour) to Zagreb or Venice to fly home. I suspect it's not very easy.

We have about 10 nights to burn starting on 09/05. Though my husband would be pleased if I was able to make it less. Maybe Istria is just too much a stretch for this trip and we should spend our time after Milan split between one of the lakes, Piedmont & Turin-flying home from there. I'd really like to include a coastal portion though.

For what it's worth the front of our trip looks like this:
Flying to Bologna on August 30 (with another couple)
3 nights Bologna
2 nights Milan
After this we split with the other couple to do our own thing.

I have found good returns from Zagreb, Venice and Turin. I'm anxious to snag the perfect-fit flights I have found while I can. Our flight needs are complicated as we are traveling with others on the front end and some of us are on award flights while others are in cash, then we have different return flights. So I really want to pick a path to just secure the airfare asap.

Actually in looking closer at the bus schedule the trek to Porec isn't as bad as I thought. I think this is doable after all. A short break in Trieste would be nice. Thanks for the schedule rialtogrl.

Now the question is which bike tour? Is that stop in Piran a big draw? Or does the venture into Buje, Motovun, Kanfanar and surrounds make a bigger draw?

Your call! I'm sure each option would have it's rewards. Some thoughts:

"a gap of 3 days to kill in Trieste...."

I think it would be reasonably easy to get to delightful Ljubljana from Trieste, and you can probably also go by bus from Ljubljana to Porec (though I won't swear to it).

"not sure how we'd get from Rovinj (ending point of tour) to Zagreb"

Rovinj to Zagreb shouldn't be that hard.... Google is your friend, limmy.

"I have found good returns from Zagreb, Venice and Turin. I'm anxious to snag the perfect-fit flights I have found while I can."

Then you need to consider the cost of getting to the airport, and any hotel stays or meals or whatever you will need along the way, and the time it will take to do so -- NOT just the cost of the flight per se. What seems cheaper, but is further, is often much more expensive once you consider all the costs....

Yes I had the same thought that Ljubljana should be in easy striking distance

Well maybe the Istria plan is the right plan after all!

You don't want to know the complicated flight arrangement I'm working on for our group. But I figured out a very good strategy last night and now it's a matter of some credit card points I transferred showing up in my flying blue account and we are good to go. Fingers crossed that the transfer happens quickly and the same fares are available when they do. I'll be thrilled if it all goes through. Or on to plan b if not.

"maybe the Istria plan is the right plan after all!"

I'm confused! Aren't two of your options for Istria only?

Earlier up in the thread I explained that maybe Istria is just too much a stretch for this trip (meaning too difficult to tack on to Milan) and maybe we should spend our post-Milan time split between one of the lakes, Piedmont and Turin-flying home from Turin.

But then I looked at the Istria bus schedule again and decided it's really not too much a stretch. Add the possibility of Ljubljana and maybe the Istria plan is the right plan after all

Sorry for the confusion!

There are several buses a day from Rovinj to Zagreb but they take some hours. You should sleep at least one night in Zagreb if you go that route. good luck with your flight strategies and keep us posted!
