Viking Danube River Bus Tour

My wife and I recently completed our Viking Danube River Cruise which ended up being a
Viking Danube River Bus Tour. Of the roughly 900 km between Nuremberg and Budapest,
only about 325 km were done cruising (Nuremberg to Regensburg & Melk to Hainburg),
while the other 575 km were spent in buses. And, most of those cruising kilometers were at night. In addition, we did another 300 km on the bus for a roundtrip between Regensburg and Passau.
We understand fully the natural variations in river water levels and how these may affect
itineraries. However, since these variations occur frequently we believe that Viking should
have had a better contingency plan than the one through which we suffered. In addition to
many uncomfortable hours on buses instead of restful cruising, we missed many, if not
most, of the scenic portions of the original itinerary along the river. One bus trip from
Regensburg to Passau, portaging around the shallow water near Deggendorf, would have
been a much more tolerable solution.
Our previous Viking River Cruise was a wonderful experience and was a primary motivation
to book this Danube River cruise. The Captain of MV Tor and the Program Director, who
accompanied us on both ships, went above and beyond to make the most of the terrible
contingency plan. Both should be commended by Viking for their efforts to appease a very
disgruntled clientele.

JaneB, I recommend you contact GC and ask about river levels and contingency plans. Good luck
