Itinerary Help – 7-10 days in Croatia….or Greece?
Early planning for a summer 2016 family trip to Croatia with our 13 and 10 year old kids. All itinerary suggestions I’ve seen cover a lot of territory with 1 to 2 nights in different locations. The thought of a different hotel nearly every night is not appealing and sound exhausting. Is it possible and reasonable to see some of the great sights in Croatia using 1 or 2 locations as a base with day trips? We would get a rental car. As we haven’t made travel plans we are flexible in where we would fly in and out of, how long to stay (7-10 days), and only require that we work Pilvice into our itinerary as it looks so amazing. Seeing the beach is nice but we are not huge sun worshipers.
As an alternative we are also thinking of going to Greece – staying a 2-3 nights in Athens and then 5-7 nights in Crete with day trips to different points on the island and ferries to other islands. Is that too much time in Crete or is there another island you would suggest?
Appreciate your thoughts.

I spent nearly two weeks in Croatia with a base in Rovinj and then taking an overnight ferry to Dubrovnik. I did day trips in both places by boats and buses. It was a great trip. I'm not sure how you would work Pilvice into that but I'm betting you could.

Unfortunately, Croatia does not, IMO, lend itself to bases as well as some places -- but it isn't impossible, depending on what YOU want to see and experience and your preferred pace. For the magnificent Plitvice Lakes, you will probably want a stay of just one or two nights. But for other parts of the country, you could probably select just a couple of bases -- the obvious choices are (I think), Rovinj if you want to visit Istria; Dubrovnik for the southern Dalmatian coast and Montenegro; or Split for that stretch of the coast and some islands. Zagreb is also an option, particularly if you are interested in Croatia's Austro-Hungarian influences. With only 7 to 10 days, you will need to be extremely selective -- at most two of these areas, and maybe not even that....

If we were to go to Croatia is this a reasonable itinerary for 10 days and keep an 11 and 13 year old entertained?
Fly into Split - spend 3-4 nights Split or Hvar
Drive to Plitvice Lakes - over night in area
Drive to Rovinj - spend 3-4 nights
Take ferry to Venice and fly home from there
