Can you tell us more what you mean by not over-top expensive?

The Greenbrier, Inn at Little Washington, and The Homestead come to mind but I don't know if they are within your budget, just a bit above it, or waaaay out of it?

For most people, I would assume these are considered too expensive but I don't want to make any assumptions.

My brother and his wife really liked this place near Meadows of Dan, VA, which is certainly out of my price range:

How far are you willing to drive? Would you like a resort or would a cabin rental in a beautiful area be interesting to you?

How about Williamsburg? There is a variety of lodging from bargain to top end and plenty to see, locally and in both Richmond and Norfolk, each an hour away.

Another, much quieter place might be The Tides Inn in Irvington, VA or the inn at Perry Cabin in St Michael's, Maryland. March is off season in both places, and they are both in areas that are lovely to explore. There are also other inns in both towns and nearby.

actually my husband is now looking for a cabin in a quiet place near the mountains,,,we only want to be traveling 2 hours more or less since its only a weekend trip......a 1 bedroom cabin by itself would be ideal!

With that time constraint that eliminates anything in VA more southern than Harrisonburg, VA.

I'd look in the places Ackislander recommended.

You could also search near Winchester, VA or Sperryville, VA.

Sperryville and surrounding towns have nice wineries you can explore and are close to beautiful views and drives. I have stayed here with my mom and the owner is wonderful and can help you plan a weekend:
