Well the airport is well out of the old town center and right next to autoroutes I believe so it should be a snap - don't have to drive thru Naples proper at all - I've just seen the airport from the train and it seems so - just saying because no one answered anything all day.

It is, but I have to say that I would probably take the train for most of the first part of the journey unless you are traveling on a Sunday and cannot pick up a car in Orvieto or Chiusi. Even so, depending on where I was staying in Toscana, I might start looking at taking fast trains to Firenze and picking up a car there.
It's not about getting on the highway or the roads around Napoli, but rather that it's such a long and mostly boring drive to Tuscany from Napoli.

If driving you can break your journey at Nettuno and Anuzo (sp?) and visit the sobering Allied military memorial/cemetery and have lunch at some seaside place but sandra IME is right - I've only take the train along that stretch of coast and it is pretty much the same scrub blah scenery - espially on autoroutes that avoid all towns and often have windblocks obscuring the view. Trains can be cheap if you book way in advance - 29 euros or so probably to Rome p.p. thru www.trenitalia.com - may be even cheaper than driving figureing day's car rental cost - if in Rome cars are useless - high petro costs and really steep tolls. Be advised to not leave anything of value out in the open in a car at autoroute rest stops - theft if rife some sources say.

There are actually many beautiful and fascinating places not very far off the main highway and train line running between Napoli and Tuscany, not just Nettuno, Monte Cassino and Anzio (note spelling). And of course one can stop at Tivoli -- one of the major sights of Italy.
But the original question posed does make it sound like there is no time for anything but making a beeline for Tuscany. If that is the case, being comfortable on the train for 5 hours is much easier than grinding along the superhighway for 5 hours.
What really matters is where in Tuscany the destination is -- and is there time to use the car to enjoy things along the way?

We arrive in Milan and take the train to Venice, then train to Rome.....then to Positano via train and ferry. After 4 nights in Positano we are taking a car service to Naples Airport....renting a car and driving to our villa in Radda. No hurry, but we will leave Positsno around 7:30, Wednesday morning. It may take close to five hours but we are four people that want a break up the travel. We are in no hurry as check in is not until 2:00pm. We will stop for lunch somewhere ( thank you for suggestions) And we will return the car in Florence after 4 days. I think my original question was not should we drive to Tuscany but is it okay to get the car at Naples Airport.....just did not want my husband to get caught up in Naples City traffic.
Thanks.
Thanks.
