travel to Montreal/Quebec City in July
We are traveling to Montreal and Quebec City in July. We will be there for 10 days. We would like suggestions of what to do with a 13 year old boy and 18 year old girl. We are renting a car and don't mind driving. We are also curious what the closest cities in Vermont and Maine are to the canadian borders for possible day trips.

With 10 days you can do a lot of exploring in this unique part of Canada. There is a lot of info on this forum if you search back.
A few ideas for Montreal:
walking the old city and riverside. There's always something happening in this very touristy area - street entertainment, boat rides, Imax theater, bicycling, history museum, carriage rides, Notre Dame basilica etc.
The downtown - Museum of Fine Arts, shopping (there is a huge underground mall complex)
The Plateau - outdoor cafes, byob restaurants, funky shops, nice bike trails, Portuguese, Jewish, etc neighborhoods.
Jean Talon Market, Atwater market
The Botanical Gardens, Olymmpic park complex.
Quebec City - strolling the old cobblestone streets, changing of the guard, ferry ride, street entertainers, outdoor cafe

You can also explore the Eastern townships, a rural area with some fun wineries. Magog is a nice little lakeside resort town. The whole area is a road biking mecca.
As for going into Vermont, Burlington is a very beautiful city about an hour south of Montreal. Most of Vermont, NH and Maine along the Quebec border is very rural.

If you want a break from city life you can drive your family from Montreal to the fine beach at Oka, about an hour northwest from the city centre. Provincial park, several kilometres of sand, beach amusements. Very busy on weekends. It's on what is called the Lake of Two Mountains, actually a widening of the delta of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers. It's quite scenic, and the locally famous Oka cheese factory, while no longer run by monks, is enroute if you care to make a purchase.
