Afgter you get on the bus about a half-hour or longer due to traffic = bus takes you to Piazza Rome a short walk from Santa Lucia train station - though water taxis and public vaporettos are out in front of the train station.

Are you leaving Venice straight away by train - then book Venice Mestre as your Venice train departure station - this is the workaday Venice on the mainland and all trains from S Lucia first stop at Mestre (I do believe but only 99.99% certain of that.) the airport buses stop first at Mestre about 15 minutes before reaching Venice proper across the long causeway over the lagoon.

Where are you going by train - do you have a ticket - if not www.trenitalia.com the Italian State Railways site has discounted tickets that are however train-specific and dicey to reserve when coming by air as they are i believe non-refundable non-changeable at least at that fare.

Full-fare tickets IME can always be bought once you arrive at the station - worst cases scenario is if 2nd class is full - at times on some of the many trains it may be - there will always IME be seats available in first class and that even has its perks - especially for folks traveling with luggage - easier to stow in 1st class plus seats are bigger, fewer in each same-size train car and you get comp snack and beverage en route. For lots of stuff about Italian trains check www.seat61.com - great info on discounted tickets; and for general things about Italian trains: www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com

There are 3 ways. The airport bus to Piazzale Roma would be best and will take about :40.

To get from the airport to the railway station, you have first to get to the Piazzale Roma, and then walk by crossing the foot bridge or catching a vaporetto across the Grand canal.

there are two sorts of buses that go from the airport to the Piazzale Roma - the ordinary ACTV buses that stop at a few places between the airport and Venice, which Pal refers to, and the ATVO ones which run without any stops and are a little quicker and more comfortable as they have a luggage compartment under the bus.

Pal is right that if you are simply going to the station in order to get a train, it may be better to get the bus to Mestre and catch the train there. OTOH if you are staying near the station, you'll need to go all the way there.

If going to a hotel you may want to go in stayle - water taxi from airport right to your hotel - costs a lot more but with luggage easier - the non-stop airport buses annhig talks about make a lot of sense - more room for luggage and no crowds coming on en route and faster but they I guess won't stop at Mestre station according to what annhigh has writ.

quite right, Pal - the ATVO buses go straight through without stopping.

you can buy your tickets at the ticket office in the airport [where you can also buy vaporetto passes] or on the bus; don't forget to validate your ticket in the little machine, whichever you decide on.
