Planning a Week = Barcelona + Valencia + ?

Dear Fodorites,

I'm planning a week-long trip with family (incl. a 17 & 20 year old) to Spain in mid-March 2016. Till now I've nailed down 2-3 nights in Barcelona plus 1-2 nights in Valencia for the Fallas (our timing coincides). I'd have loved to add San Sebastian but I suspect the weather in mid-March might not be conducive. Still want to add a third stop for a couple of days. So, some initial questions:

1. Is driving to Valencia worth it? How expensive is a 1-way and 2-way car rental? I heard that the tollway is pricey. How much? Or is train best?
2. What alse can we add on? I understand that its best to not bother with Madrid/Sevilla etc. given the limited time and keep that for another trip.
3. Is chancing the Basque region worth it? Too much to even think of Malaga? Where do we fly back from to the U.S.?

I'd love some food for thought.

I think the tolls on the AP7 would be around 40 euro. Takes about 3.5 hours.

Car rentals are all over the place depending on type of car and how long you are renting, etc. go to www.kemwell.com to compare rates. Looks like around 40 euro a day for a compact manual car if you only keep it 3 days (including insurance). You might want a bigger car, though.

read this advice re what you must do to rent there http://about-spain.net/travel/driving.htm

I think Barcelona and Valencia is enough for one week (I"d add more time in Barcelona). If you end up in Valencia, you could probably fly out of Valencia or Alicante, compare choices. You'll no doubt have to connect somewhere, depends where you live in the US (whether you can connect in Madrid and then nonstop or what). Air Europa and Iberia have flights from Valencia or Alicante to the US, changing in Madrid. Valencia probably more convenient for you if you are there already.

IMO, trying to see both Barcelona and Valencia in a single week would be MORE than enough. JMO.

Alright, so after some serious combing through posts, I am converging on planning the trip as 3 days in Barcelona and then driving to/back from Valencia (2 nights) - enroute stopping in Peniscola and Tarragona. Now I am thinking of hitting one of them on the way down and the other on the way up. Any suggestions? Ideas about these coastal towns that sound wonderful?

Check the opening hours of the things you want to see and plan accordingly.

Anyone who has rented car of TellusCar - http://telluscar.com
Have checked around and Googled and they seem fine. Good prices in any case.
