Sunday breakfast in Co. Clare

Beginning to flesh out my 2015 visit to Ireland (#8 for me) with granddaughter and one or both of her parents.

We will undoubtedly land in Shannon early on Sunday morning, collect our rental car and head for Doolin to visit the Cave and take the boat tour of the Cliffs of Moher.

The boat tours are at noon, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.; the cave tours begin at 11 a.m. and the cafe opens at 10. They have a nature trail but not sure about opening hours.

Can someone suggest someplace along the way (Ennis, perhaps?) to stop for breakfast? Obviously we may have time to kill. It being Sunday morning, will there be anything open or should we just eat in Shannon Airport in the Estuary Restaurant?

Perhaps by the time we collect luggage, pass through Immigration, hit the ATM, and pick up and adjust to our rental car, by the time we reach Doolin we could eat at the Cave.

Oops. The Estuary seems to have become the Limestone Cafe.

Staying tonight in the Wild Honey in Lisdoonvarna.
Will inquire if they provide breakfast to non residents as the location is quite close to Doolin.

The Limestone at the Airport, Both the Park Inn and the Oakwood Arms in Shannon are open to non residents.

Not sure on Ennis before 9 on a Sunday?

Randaddies Lahinch might be an option..

There will be somewhere in Doolin doing Breakfast pop into the Doolin Hostel and ask for Anthony, he might at least have tea and toast on offer..

Apparently I do a serious Ulster Fry but might be a bit of a Detour

Breakfast sorted and without teaching mi nana to suck eggs looks like you have a pretty full day planned straight on arrival.. Where are you spending the night?

Thanks for the help, SeeDee and Tony!

Tony, I do appreciate your concern (I'm the nana in this group and always willing to learn). In seven trips so far I have not fallen victim to jetlag (and I will be the driver). Perhaps my constitution and perhaps just running on adrenaline.

Here's what I was thinking for that first day. One hour drive to Doolin. I have been down into the Cave and have elderly arthritic knees so will stay topside while the teen and her parent(s) go admire the stalactite. I can doze in the sun on the bench by the cave entrance. Then I will be ready for a stroll around the Nature Walk. The Cave tour is about an hour.

Then time to mess about some until the Boat Tour which is another hour; either sitting or standing on the prow if we are lucky in "seating."

Two hours' drive to just north of Athlone to be prepared for traveling to Clonmacnoise first thing next morning.

The Ulster Fry sounds good (do you deliver?) but I'll pass on the black pudding! I'm thinking the Doolin Cave Cafe will be open by the time we arrive there so it might be our best bet. Or a light repast in Limestone and then lunch at Doolin Cave after the tour. With some ideas in hand we can probably wing it.

Just back from Doolin and can confirm that Doolin Hostel can provide a Continental breakfast from 7.30 am. The very helpful person at the Tourist Information made a call for me and they are happy to cater for non-residents.
The other suggestion was for you to book accommodation locally for Sunday night and see if they would be prepared to provide you with a Sunday morning breakfast when you reach the B&B from Shannon.

Thanks, SeeDee! I appreciate your taking the time to inquire for me. The continental breakfast may be just what we want; of course, we don't know yet what time we will arrive in Shannon. June 2015 is a way off, yet.

Just checking jaja - when you talk about the boat tour, it's only the tour of the cliffs and does not include any of the Aran Islands, right? Our tour does both and leaves Doolin at 10.

Don't want to plan around 10 am and have a nasty surprise!

Yes, kwren, we are doing just the cliffs....boats "sail" at noon, 3 and 5 if memory serves, which it often doesn't these days.

Plans are firming up....my son's brother-in-law will be joining us from London for the first 3 days, so Tony, there will be four of us for your Ulster Fry! Just kidding. He will be staying the night before at the Park Inn so he will have their breakfast on our arrival day. I'm guessing that the rest of us will have something at the airport to tide us over til lunch at Doolin Cave.
Reading back through my thread, I see that we now will stay very close to Clonmacnoise rather than north of Athlone. That dear lady has retired so we had to make other arrangements.

The park do Breakfasts for non residents but breakfasts at the Limestone café above arrivals is a good option (had one the other week) Birr and Shannonbridge are decent options near Clonmacnoise, Birr always gets my vote over Athlone.

Interesting to hear about the Park, Tony. David will be walking over to the airport to pick up his car about the same time we will be getting ours so will see how it shakes out. I am leaning toward the Limestone, myself.

Our B&B is Kajon House, very near to Clonmacnoise so we can get an early start to the day.
