Paris and Rome

We are traveling from Paris to Rome. What should we see in the 2 weeks time we have and what is the best way to travel?

I would pick up guide books for both places and see what interests you most. Also, check out the destination information on this site.

I would suggest flying between the cities.

Does the two weeks include Paris, Rome and everything in between? How many nights do you actually have on the ground?

You could easily spend the two weeks in just those cities and fly in between - but without knowing who "we" is, your interests and where else you have been it's hard to make any useful recos.

We have been to both. I don't know how many days you have in Rome. In the past, I've never done tours, except for food tours in Paris , but I highly suggest looking at Walks of Italy in Rome. There is really too much to see and too much history to try and do it alone. The history background makes everything come alive and the thing I really like about these tours are, they are small and they give you headphones so you are not trying to hear the information above all the other sounds.

That is why they sell guidebooks. Go to your local library and check out travel DVDs for Rome and Paris. You do have to do some work yourself.

The below Fodor's thread was posted a month or so ago and contained a very good list of things to do and see in Paris. Maybe it will help on the Paris side of it.

The distance from Rome to Paris is about 850 miles so anything other than air travel will consume a significant part of your trip. That's okay if you want to do some auto touring but with two weeks scheduled and two of the worlds most historic cities on your list I would opt for the air travel.

By train...

Step 1: 14:41 TGV Paris to Turin arriving 20:18 from 29 euros (from 46 euros 1st class) booked at www.capitainetrain.com - it's as nice scenic run, I've put my own photos & video of this trip on www.seat61.com/Paris-to-Milan-by-TGV-train.htm

Tip: Have lunch at the celebrated Train Bleu restaurant inside the Gare de Lyon before strolling across the concourse to your waiting Italy Express. It's like dining in Versailles, see www.le-train-bleu.com

Overnight in Turin, a wonderful city even if you're not a fan of the 1969 Michael Caine film "The Italian Job"...

Step 2: Take a high-speed Frecciariossa train from Turin to Rome Termini in 4h30 or so, from 29 euros (39 euros 1st class!) booked at www.trenitalia.com

They leave regularly, I'd take a later one so you can have a look round Turin in the morning.

This is PART of your trip experience, not just transportation, and it avoids all the airport stress and hassle.

By all means take the 10:41 morning TGV and an evening Frecciarossa to do the whole trip in a day, or the 10:41 morning TGV, afternoon exploring Turin, overnight hotel and morning Frecciarossa. The choice is yours!

I'll add one more slower train option - the ultimate Swiss Alps scenic version!

Take an evening TGV - say the 16:23 or 18:23 - Paris to Zurich in 4h03 centre to centre from 25 euros www.capitainetrain.com

Stay overnight in Zurich.

Next day, take the 07:32 to Chur and the fabulous Bernina Express to Tirano with connecting train to Milan. This is THE Alpine train ride. http://www.seat61.com/BerninaExpress.htm for photos & video.

Continue to Rome the same day, or vreak it up with a night in Milan.

With 2 weeks in hand I think you have plenty of time for a real journey like this between the two great capitals rather than a rushed flight.
