Lake Como - favourite restaurants

We had a memorable meal at Albergo Milano in Varenna and another at Vecchia Varenna. We would love to hear others' recommendations for restaurants all around this area of Bellagio,Varenna etc.

Thanks
Sally

Lario in Menaggio as well as a couple of the restaurants in the Managgio town square area.

There is at least one poster here who will, I am certain, regale you with meals had in Bellagio.

Just hanging out at the hotel restaurant (outside) across from the Varenna ferry dock, enjoying the resident dog and some wine was also memorable.

Locanda dell'isola Comacina. Located on Lake Como's only island. www.locanda-isola-comacina.com A wonderful experience.
In Bellagio-
The outdoor restaurant at the Hotel Florence. Gorgeous views and wonderful food.
Last but certainly not least, for a special occasion, La Terrazza at the Villa Serbelloni. One of the best dining experiences we've had.

Another vote for the outdoor restaurant at the Hotel Florence. Excellent food. Great for lunch or dinner (on warm evenings). I rank it above Bilacus, which is a Fodorite favorite in Bellagio. I haven't dined at La Terrazza, but that seems like a excellent suggestion. The setting alone is superb.

We, too, enjoyed our dinners at Albergo Milano and Vecchia Varenna.

I can also recommend Ristorante La Punta in Bellagio. It is not in the main town area. It is about a 10 minute walk outside of town.

Take the road past Hotel Serbelloni (I think it's Via Roma) and just keep going to the end of the road. The restaurant is right on the lake with a fabulous view.

Another favorite was Al Veluu near Tremezzo. We went there after visiting Villa Carlotta. You need a car or taxi to get there. We found a taxi at the ferry stop it was 5 Euros to the restaurant. It is at the top of a hill with a very commanding view of the whole area.

If you cannot find a taxi, call the restaurant and they will send someone to pick you up (5 Euros also).

The people at the restaurant were wonderful. The food was excellent. We really enjoyed the whole experience.

Don't miss Il Cavatappi, a tiny 5 table establishment up an obscure alley in Varenna. It was recommended by the bartender at Hotel du Lac when we stayed there 3 years ago.

The staff consists of the very congenial owner-chef, and a charming hostess-waitress. Fantastic, reasonably-priced food. I had a smoked mozzarello risotto that is the most delicious rice dish I've ever tasted.

Reservations are a must! We tried to get in on each evening of our 3-night stay, and could do so only once.

At Hotel Silvio we got talked into a first course of spaghetti with tomato basil sauce. How dull I thought. When they lifted the lid from the platter at the table, I nearly fell over from the wonderful aroma of the sauce made from the fresh tomatoes and the herbs from their garden. I never knew "plain" spaghetti could be so good. The fresh lake fish that followed was pretty wonderful too.

Another vote for Locanda Isola Comacina. Read my Sept. 2005 trip report on Germany, Switzerland, and Italy; the entry for Day 14 includes a detailed description of our meal there. It is a wonderful experience.

Hello Salt:

We had a memorable lunch at the terrace restaurant of the Hotel Belvedere in Bellagio. The hotel is a the top of the hill with a great view of the lake and surroundings. Website:
www.belvederebellagio.com

We phoned the hotel from the boat dock and they picked us up and returned us (3 hours later)in their van. A prior reservation helped in this regard. The hotel staff was extremely cordial. Gradyghost

We had a very disappointing and quite expensive meal at La Barchetta. This was two years ago. The people we ate with chose the restaurant based on a good meal they had there in the past, and they too we very disappointed. It seems the place had changed hands and did not live up to their previous experience. I was just wondering when you last ate there?

We had an excellent lunch at Trattoria San Giacomo on Salita Serbelloni in Bellagio Sep 05. Great food, service and at very reasonable prices.
