Trip from Vienna to Budapest

We are traveling from Vienna to Budapest over 2 days. We would like some recommendations for ideas of what to do and where to stay. We were thinking of staying somewhere between the two cities. Should we go by train or hire a car?

Very easy, fast and inexpensive by train.

Is there something in particular between the cities that would compel you to stay? If not, it seems to me staying in Budapest would make the most sense.

Thanks for your reply - there is nothing specific. We are in Vienna on business until Friday and then have meetings in Budapest from Monday so have the time, so its always good to get to know another country (we are South Africans). So it does seem it would be best to go straight to Budapest.

Like others I'd probably catch the train straight to Budapest, but there are some interesting roman remains (use google maps), some spas and also some wine production around neusiedlersee.

Yes, like bilboburgler says the Neusiedler See area is great, you can easily spend a day there. There's a big shallow lake where you can even rent a tiny yacht. There are many fine dining options too, I think there are even some Michelin restaurants..

It's very easy to drive between Viena and Budapest too so you can start early morning in Vienna, spend the day driving and hanging around Neusiedler See and arrive to Budapest for the night.
