Wearing engagement ring in Greece
My husband and I are going to Athens, then spending a few days on a cruise of the islands, then back to Athens. He's concerned about me wearing my engagement ring in Greece. Worried it will attract the wrong attention. Should I leave it behind or is it fine to bring with me? I never thought about it until he said something. Any opinions? Thank you!!

Hi
Is he concerned that you lose your ring during your holiday, or does he believe the Greeks are a bunch of undernourished thieves ready to cut your finger to get your ring ?
If you are really worried and have a big diamond, just turn the ring so that the diamond be inside your palm.
Funny to read about all these people who think we're in a war zone in Europe...
Enjoy your stay in Athens - it is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to. And the Greeks are charming.
Actually without your wearing a wedding ring, you'd attract more attention to yourself !

I'm with Elaine. I never travel with anything I couldn't stand to lose. (Well, losing my photos would be upsetting...) I don't necessarily expect jewelry to be stolen, but it marks you as someone with money and therefore a more desirable pickpocketing target, and unless you never take it off there's always the chance of losing it. What's the problem with leaving it at home? (I travel sometimes for months at a time, the good stuff goes in my safe deposit box.)

I always wear my ring when I travel....I just always wear it. I am no more worried about it away from home than I am at home. I do not take it off and have never been the target of a successful pickpocket.

Now why do you think this could happen in Greece and not in your own city/country?
The Greek islands in particular are among the safest places that i know..
Besides wearing an engagement ring is something most Greek women do... there's nothing spectacular about it really....

Unless your ring is a really giant rock, I wouldn't even think about it! I've been wearing both my rings - engagement and wedding- for years in NYC and Athens with no problems. Believe me, the only thing to worry about in Greece is not wanting to come home!

I think it's OK to wear an engagement or wedding ring traveling if you are a person who never takse your rings off. Otherwise I would be more worried about you losing them, not about someone stealing it.

I really hope this is a joke. You are not going to a 3rd world country dear, Greece is the 29 most developed country in the world. And Athens is just like any other European capital, and it's one of the safest to be precise.

I once took off my engagement ring in the ladies' room on the autostrada, and walked out leaving it above the sink. Luckily, someone followed me to ask if it was mine. Since then, I leave it at home when I'm traveling.

I left a ring on the sink edge in a public washroom on the autobahn...no one came after me though, lol. It wasn't a diamond but a Geog Jensen silver ring I'd bought in Copenhagen. Still miss it and that was 50 years ago!
