Euro Quiz # 74 - Potpurri and Lakes!
1- What is Switzerland's largest lake wholly inside Switzerland and the next two largest that are wholly inside Switzerland?
2- At Grindelwald, Switzerland in the Jungfrau Region there are two high points on each side of the bowl-like amphitheatre Grindelwald sits in the middle of - One is called Little and the other Big - what are the two whole names in German?
3- What is meant by dynamic conversion in terms of giving someone a poorer exchange rate when paying by credit or debit card for something like a hotel room?
4- When did or does Daylight Savings Time start for western Europe?
5- The first transmission from (1)???????? (London area's main BBC TV transmitting tower) took place on 28 March 1956, when it succeeded the transmitter at (2) ?????????? where the BBC had started the world's first scheduled television service in November 1936. 9: that isn't a "Lake" (it's one of those trick questions, how many Lakes are there in the Lake District - you'll find all but one are <i>called</i> something else).

Yes #9 is called XXXXXXXX Water - but a lake by any name is still a lake - a lake big enough to be able to host a world speed record by boat.
#2 must have Little XXXXX and Big XXXX in their names - they are not the high points of the area but the bowl-like amphitheatre - one on the east and one of the west - they may not be the highest points of the bowl - hairpin twisting tiny paved road leads up to the one on the east and a train goes up to one on the west, jumping off point for trains to the Jungfraujoch station.
Leaves # 2, 7, 9 to be answered correctly.
Pvoyageuse has two right - both of hers (?) are right
3, 4, 8, 10 from percy are right on
Parick has 5 and knows 9 but ain't tellin'

Well Grosse Scheidegg and Kleine Scheidegg would be correct in German.
I've hoofed it up to each and boy there is a heck of a walk, especially at a good pace! Years ago for that - now would take the train or Grindelwald bus as knees are not what they used to be. Walked from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg with detour to First then down via Schwarerdalp (sp?) via Reichenbach Falls to Meiringen once in a day - how I yearn for those days of yester year! Still walking miles in Europe but not up or down inclines like that.
Tomorrow I thought I'd forego the usual quiz and try something new to get others to participate!

1. Benaco/Lac de Garde/Gardasee/Lake Garda
2. Verbano/Lac Majeur/Langensee/Lake Maggiore
3. Lario/Lac de Côme/Comersee/Lake Como
4. Lago Trasimeno/Lac Trasimène/Trasimenosee/Lake Trasimeno
or do you count the saltwater lagunas too?

those are right but I did not recongize at all the names above being for those lakes - I meant of course as they are commonly know like on maps - never saw Lake Lario on a map for Lago di Como - so yes of course you are right and I thought something to that effect you must be but just never heard those names for the first three - I have here a brochure I picked up in Como with Lago di Como on it?

These (ancient Roman) names are very commonly used in Italy.
Verbano-Cusio-Ossola is the name of the province where Lake Maggiore lies. The capital of the province is called Verbania (artificial name created under Mussolini).
Lario is very popular too. The word can be found in many names of villages along the Lake, like Abbadia Lariana, Mandello Lario, Gera Lario ..... in order to distinguish them from other places with the same name.
