Suggestions for a scenic drive from Porto to Lisbon
We are planning to take a whole day (about 10 hours) to drive from Porto to Lisbon in mid-October. We are considering short stops in Batalha and Fatima. I was wondering if there are other short stops we can do or a scenic route we can follow to make the drive more interesting? I was hoping there was something nature related (like a gorge or a cliff, etc) because my friends might be sick & tired of me bringing them to see cathedrals and monasteries.

If you are interested in seaside towns at all, Nazare is where a Hawaiian surfer rode the tallest wave in the world. By October the waves may already be quite large on the Atlantic. You can take a funicular up from Nazare to the hilltop, then walk down to the lighthouse to look over the waves. There is a little information area set up in the lighthouse about that big ride. From the hilltop you can also look down at the beach, which is one of the widest, longest beaches I have seen (we're from Hawaii and quite used to nice beaches).

Nazare sounds interesting although beaches don't really excite us as we're from Florida. 10 hours does make a long day for a road trip so it would be nice to stop for lunch (and maybe merienda) somewhere interesting. We could pack a picnic lunch or snack if there's a nice view but not a good restaurant.

Having any wine with lunch and then driving would not be a good idea anywhere and even more so in Portugal, where the wine tends to be stronger, which goes well with the meal. I would break up the drive into at least two days. Relax and enjoy yourself.
Just a note regarding the beaches. Florida has nothing remotely like the coast of Portugal.
