Creating a Central + East Java Dream Travel!
Hello Everyone!
I am fulfilling my lifelong dream of going to Java in Indonesia. The opportunity to travel there came quite suddenly. I am thus rushing to figure out where exactly to go!
I will have 9 days. I fly into Yogyakarta on Feb 4. I spend my first night in Borobudur. Everything else is unplanned. I fly out from Surabaya. The idea is to travel and sightsee whilst making my way from the center of the island to the east, to Surabaya.
I'm young on a flashpacker budget, studied art history & some geology, I love hiking + safe motorbiking. So far, my itinerary features:
Mt. Bromo
Yogyakarta
Borobudur Temple
Mt. Inje
I'm not sure what route is best between these places. Also I don't think these places take up nine whole days of sight-seeing.
I would really appreciate any suggestions on good places to visit. Little gems. Big gems.
What's the best way to get around the island? What are good places in between these big attractions to visit?

Another thing - the Ijen Crater (accidentally misnamed above as Mt. Inje) is in the way east, next to Bali. I am thinking that it might be too far out of the way if I am focused on central Java with Mt. Bromo. What are good places to fill out the itinerary to replace Ijen?

Hi there,
just at the last minute before your departure I want to recommend visiting Surakarta aka Solo on your travels to Surabaya. You’ll find palaces to visit as well as very interesting markets and a theatre. On top of that you can climb a volcano from there, Gunung Lawu, 3.265 m above sea level. It is one of the holiest mountains in Indonesia. Both Ijen and Bromo are at the far eastern end of the island, far from the central Java area where Borobudur and Prambanam are located. Really, that is a lot of area to try to cover in 9 days.
Just in central Java, I'd recommend visiting Borobudor, Prambanam (and see the Ramayana Ballet at the open air theatre near Prambanam), the Dieng Plateau, Solo, and Candi Sukuh. If you want to get to eastern Java, the train is probably the best option, as we found no flights from central Java to Surabaya.
While you are in central Java, you'll need a car and driver to cover all the places i mentioned.

Since your time is limited I'd suggest you fly from Central to East Java. To see Bromo (and Ijen if you like) it's best to arrange for a tour/transport organization to pick you up at the airport or train station. Your hotel or hostel will do that if you call them in advance.
Java Banana is a good place to stay at Bromo. I don't think they actually handle transport and tours, but they'll be able to put you in touch with someone who will. Or there are dozens of place in Yogya that will do that.
You can also go overland by car, bus or train from Central to East Java, but it's quite time consuming.
I'd stay two or three nights in the Borobudur area -- there's a lot to do and you can use your Borobudur hotel as a base for the Dieng Plateau and Mt. Merapi. Have a sunset drink at the Amanjiwo hotel that overlooks Borobudur. It will cost as much as dinner at a warung, but the architecture is amazing.
Then two nights in Yogyakarta (Prambanan, the Kraton/palace, water palace and other urban sites. Try to see a dance performance at the Kraton. Maybe a day in Solo/Surakarta, especially if you're interested in batik.
And the rest in East Java.

I haven't been to Ijen, but it sounds like it's worth the effort to get there.
