Hello everybody! I'm coming with my husband to New Zealand on 3th of February , we are staying for one mounth, and we plan to visit everything we can, we want to rent a car , to stay in camps .My question is that anybody can help me with some useful information about car rentals, camps, what to visit etc or with a full trip advice if anybody travelled New Zealand in this way. It's for the first time we travel out from Europe and I'm a little lost, and we never travelled in this way, we always traveled with a travel agency so everything was arranged for us, but now we want a different holiday.
So for everybody to understand we want to travel by ourself , to visit all the spectecular places if it possible so we need help how to do it, how to organize this trip, where to stay, car rental etc and if it possible all this for a reasonable price.Thank you very much.

I suggest you do your day of exploring in Christchurch on arrival. That will give you a bit of time to recover from jet lag (aasuming you are coming from North America) and you will be more rested when you pick up your rental and start driving on the 'wrong' side of the road.
In Christchurch I highly recommend the tour of the quake zone put on by the museum as well as the Quake City exhibit near the container mall. Fascinating to learn about life in the earthquake zone and the ways in which the city is recovering.
A note of caution regarding driving, passed on to us by our local guides on a recent trip to the south island: Visitors tend to consider the lack of traffic on the roads as an advantage. However, without much oncoming traffic they don't have the visual cues to remind them which side of the road they should be on. Very easy to drift over to the wrong side coming round a curve and not realize it till they hit someone head on. Be careful and stay safe.
