What is the best side of the plane to fly on going from BKK to KTM?
I am trying to arrange seating in this next week and want to know which side of the plane is likely to give us the best views of the Himalayas.

If you and Cheryl include Venice in one of your upcoming European trips, I would be glad to tell you what we love about this city we return to again and again (and what we know about avoiding the worst of it). It is one of the best cities in the world to fly (as opposed to train) into.

The right hand side is best, but only if the visibility is very clear. Fingers crossed for you, but the smog and air pollution only seems to [temporarily] clear after heavy rain has dampened things down.
We went into and left Venice on a small cruise ship last November. That's the way to do it.

Thanks for the offer about Venice, cmstraf. We have outlined an Italy trip, flying into Venice and out of Rome, but we don't know yet when we might do this trip.
You are going to KTM at the best time of the year to get mountain views. As you are flying in, the pollution in KTM won't be the determining factor of whether you see the Himalayas, the weather will be. Even if it it smoggy or foggy or low clouds in KTM, you are still likely to see the mountains from the plane.

Well, it's one of several chances. We'll be flying into Kathmandu from Bangkok, plan to take the mountain flight to Everest (allowing at least 2-3 days of chances) while we are in KTM, then will be flying out of KTM to Paro, Bhutan and out of Paro back to Bangkok. We are also spending a night at the Dwarika Resort in Dhulikhel in the middle of our stay in Kathmandu (friend got us a very good deal for both Dwarikas, though I still prefer the location of the Hyatt), so that will be another chance for mountain views.
Kathie, I just read (slowly) this time your trip report of Kathmandu in 2008. It's excellent and I am so glad that I decided to do that rather than 3 weeks in Bhutan.

p.s. LL, I respectfully disagree about Venice and cruise ship. Where we stay in Venice is the Pensione Accademia, used to be Russian embassy, has lovely garden, is 5 minutes away from the Accademia museum, on a side canal and near the Zattere where Italians take their passeggiattas. It's about a 15 minute walk to the Piazza San Marco, close enough to be central, far enough to be near lots of peaceful side canals. Try the Dorsoduro area if you are ever back there.

It's good for your health to laugh out loud. We both have a definite preference for inside, though our one experience in a helicopter (Kuaii) was pretty cool--felt like being in a motorcycle in the air!
