Traveling from Milan Malpensa Airport

Does anyone have any experience getting from Milan Malpensa Airport to to the city? From what I've been able to find so far, it looks like I should take the Malpensa Express to the Cadorna station (although there is mention of having to either pass through or stop at Bovisa first - not sure which), then pick up the M1 line and take that to the Lotto stop (near my destination). Does this sound correct? Or does anyone know of a better way?

Bdc323 I took the Malpensa express from Cadorna station to the airport and it was really easy and efficient. I can definitely recommend using the public transport in Milan. Just be aware of your surroundings re pick pockets etc.

It does look as Cadorna would be closest. Make sure you take a train that doesn't require a change at Bovisa. There are fairly frequent trains that don't require a change. You can see these on Trenord (operates the trains in Milan area). Enter Malpensa aeroporto for your departure and Milano Cadorna.

The metro website.

The metro has always listed you need a ticket for your luggage, but I've never seen anyone bother with it. YMMV.

Luggage Ticket
Price: € 1.50
Validity: 90 minutes after stamping. Ticket is valid for the transport of a single piece of luggage for which a ticket is required. On the Milan city network a standard Milan ticket may be used in place of a luggage ticket. As for all tickets, luggage tickets should be stamped at the start of the journey; luggage tickets should be presented to ticket inspectors alongside your ticket or travel card if requested.

Forget Bovisa and take any Cadorna bound train from Malpensa Terminal 1; departures about every 30 min (03 and 26, at certain hrs 03 and 33).
May be the airport bus stop Milano City Fiera could be more convenient for you.

No need to purchase tickets ahead of time, correct? I know it's recommended that you do so for the high speed rails between major cities, but I just want to confirm this is not necessary for other trains like the Malpensa express.

I don't think advance purchase for that route is even possible, and it wouldn't be advisable anyway. What if your flight arrives too late to catch a specific train?

no advance purchase needed... and that reminds me... last summer when we arived from the malpensa express and were going down to the metro (a long, steep escalator) -- there were business just before the escalator with signs that implied you needed to get your metro ticket there.(at inflated prices).... you do NOT... take the escalator down and you will see lots of machines to easily sell you a metro ticket.
