I am trying to find Lavido in Northern Ireland. Does anyone know where it is? Perhaps that is an old name?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Just seen your other post about Limavady. I do think that you've got the name wrong as there is nowhere in either ROI or NI with that name. It's not listed in the Parish register either.

I messaged a friend of mine who lives in ROI and he asked someone else who said who thought that they had heard of Lavido in County Derry (Londonderry)in NI. It still doesn't come up on any NI google search as a town or suburb but it's a starting point.

The best candidate I can offer is Lavey, which is in Co. Cavan, in the province of Ulster but in the Irish republic.

This sounds to me very much like the kind of word you think you see in, for example, Irish 19th century census returns or Army records, or many Catholic baptismal or burial records. Or in some survivor's confused memory of what they were told by an ancestor.

The priest, recruiting sergeant or census compiler asks a question (like "where were you born?") The answer might be a "real" town - or Ireland's rather odd territorial concepts of barony or townland, or a part of a town with a local name that might not necessarily occur in formal directories.

The person asking the questions may very well mishear, and write down something quite different (often, the question didn't really matter.) It might then be mistranscribed by the 1950s Mormon volunteer, or recent enthusiast, creating databases. Or the survivor might just get it wrong (my father went to his grave insisting his father had been born in a part of Co Wexford that just doesn't exist. Several days' driving round the area finally threw up a place that sounds similarish, but is spelt completely differently)

Or you've got the information confused. What you think is lavido might be the Convent of the La Vida sisters. I'm sort of making this up, because I'm unaware of such an order - but there might have been a local memorial to Irish soldiers killed at La Vida during the Peninsular War (no such battle, AFAIK - but lots and lots of Irishmen killed in Spain or Portugal in the early 19th century) - and that's what's come down to you, distorted.

If you give this site all the information you've got about this lavido, someone else might make the connection.

Rubicund--- our family history traces back to Lavido. We do believe it was in County Derry (Londonderry), but have found no details on its location. It is interesting to hear that your friend's friend had heard of it and mentioned the same area. We have been at a loss as to how to confirm this further. Thanks for the link to that message board. I will try that. We are traveling to NI and ROI next year and would love to find Lavido!!

How?

Have you got a birth or baptismal certificate (and if religious, in what language?) If it's not official (it's an inscription in a family Bible, let's say) how do you know you're reading old writing accurately? If it's "known" in the family, but there's no hard record except great grandads's conversation with your aunt - what else do you know about where he came from?

Every single piece of information my parents offered about where in Ireland their parents were born has turned out to be inaccurate - but always, we now know, based on a sensible misunderstanding of orally-transmitted information. It's an occupational hazard with chasing Irish ancestors.

Just looking through that, there's a place called Labby.

And in Victorian times, it was usual, if you were writing a long list and wanted to indicate "ditto", to put "do"......

Unless this is you enquiring, it seems to show that Lavido does exist somewhere, unless it's like Brigadoon.
