The most wonderful city we have ever visited is Paris. It gets our top rating in just about every category. Paris has the best food, art, architecture, and ambiance. We are happy just to spend the day walking the streets. Our list of spectacular restaurants is a long one but if you want us to pick one we will start at the top and pick Guy Savoy. It has been 18 months since we have been to Paris. The major trip we took during the past 12 months was to Italy in April. With apologies to Rome, we will submit Positano as the most enchanting place we visited. The views of the Mediterranean were breathtaking with one of the best being from our hotel room balcony. It is the perfect base from which to explore the other towns along the Amalfi Coast. We ate at some very good restaurants there including some beachfront trattorias and some family run pizza parlors. Our favorite was LaSponda, a Michelin starred restaurant overlooking the sea..

When I started typing I realised you limited the choices to visited in the last 12 months and only these four countries. Sorry, but my wonderful ever visited city in Europe doesn't fit these criteria.

It's not only contradictory, it's meaningless. If only people who have visited France and Italy answer the question (which is very likely), there's no basis for comparison with Belgium and Greece. I can tell you already that it will be a virtual tie between Paris and Rome.

Stavanger Norway*:

Everything was so clean. I think it was the constant rain.
There was a bike race there at the time.
It's close to Preikestolen, which scared the crap out of me.

There was a nice pizza takeout place on one of the streets into downtown. I think it was called "Pizza". Only place we could afford.

Maybe you could get the Fodor's editors to change your headline so that instead of reading "ever" visited, is asked people about what place they visited in the last 12 months that they liked best.

There are some places that were much more enjoyable a few years ago than they are now -- for various reasons -- so I don't think it is totally unreasonable to ask about recent travels only. However, I will say that I tend to like certain places for certain things very much, but other places for other things very much. And not every marvelous place in the world has a restaurant I like. I go to different places to enjoy different things. Somebody in the mood for the charm of a village in Scotland is not going to appreciate Bologna or Lisbon, and vice versa. But next year? Or at a different moment in their life?

Some people have ONE thing they are looking for from a trip to Europe. Once they find it, they go back over and over and dig in more deeply. But other people see Europe as a continent with an inexhaustible variety. Their favorite thing is TRAVELING, and they probably don't have a "favorite" place, either from the last 12 months or the last 12 years.

Seems like someone is asking us to help choose their next Europe destination.

The requirement to limit choices to the last 12 months is silly. European cities have been there for centuries and not a whole lot of change is going on from year to year.

I have been to Europe only once in the last year and so I have only one option. I love the city I visited enough to have returned for the 9th time and I love it for countless reasons. Who knows whether you would love it and for what reason.

Sorry - don;t like the rules - they don't make sense. I've been to europe more than 100 times since I first went in 1975 - and have not been to most of my favorites in the past 12 months. ≈

Granted places do change over time - but sights that have been there for a millennium or more aren't going anywhere. (The restaurants only sort of make sense in 12 months - but there are some we have been going to for 20 or more years that we still enjoy.)

1.Prague last visit June 2014 next visit 31st October 2014.

2.Beautiful architechture, lovely green place usually with beer gardens and the BEER, it is the best in the world.

Since so few are using up there quota, I would like to nominate a second city - Reykjavik*:

1) So many backpackers - it makes you feel young even if you're not.
2) Friendly locals at the steam baths insisting you take a 15 minute shower before you enter the pool - I've never felt so clean.
3) The whole island could blow at any moment. When it doesn't you feel fortunate, and focus on the good things in life.

Favourite restaurant - there's a place that serves salmon at the bottom of the main pedestrian mall. As best I can recall the street was called Laugavegur. And they serve alcohol to underage tourists.

1) Florence, I had no idea I would love it as much as I did.
2) The people, the art, and the vibe of the city. I could live there for a while each year.

cold - you've listed two countries that are not on the list. The OP is only interested in France, Italy, Greece, and Belgium.
