Romania driving itinerary help needed
I forgot to tag my post and am reposting,
I am set for my trip leaving Sept 23rd. Picking up a car at OTP Bucharest airport when I land @ 2pm. Dropping it off same place 11 days later. The weather forecasts predicts a cold front (very cold for me, I am from Florida).coming through with chance of rain. I was originally planning to head straight to Sinaia from OTP, and spend the night there, and onwards towards Brasov the next day and head further north subsequently, and doing a loopy route with Sibiu and the Transfagaram highway (a treat for husband who loves to drive, especially challenging winding roads) nearer the end of the trip before returning to OTP or Bucharest depending on how much time we have left after exploring the countryside. But now I am thinking of avoiding the very cold weather in Sinaia and Brasov areas and wondering what the alternatives are. Or am I being silly planning the driving route according to cold temps predicted? Any advice would be appreciated. Also, should I visit both Peles and Pelisor castles? Is it worth paying extra for using my camera? I haven't booked any accommodations and so can be flexible. I love fall foliage and would like to know which route is best to appreciate that if possible. Read about "Cheia - Muntele Rosu (Red Mountain).
It is a small town on Muntele Rosu (which is not too high, maybe 1200 m. only) and in the autumn the colors of the trees are so beautiful, from yellow to red." Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I'm landing in OTP at 16:00 on Sep 24. Hadn't checked the weather yet so thanks for the heads up. I'm not driving, but if you're in the car wouldn't rain be more of a problem than cold? I definitely plan to see both Peles and Pelisor, but I am a big Art Nouveau fan. In fact I have places like Timisoara, Oradea and Cluj on my itinerary just to see AN buildings.

Tangwah..as I said in another post to you..try your best to fit in Maramures(h)...for a great look at Old Romania. It would probably mean cutting the drives your husband is considering. Actually, Sinaia in the snow is quite beautiful (see my pics of October in the area)

You might want to take a look at my trip report--a little old, but I suspect that the sights have not changed much; click on my name to find it.

Thursdaysd, I tend to obsess a little with the weather. It looks like we are in for decent weather. Adrienne, hope you are enjoying Berlin and Dresden. Tower, I am planning to stay 2 or 3 nights in Marmures. Intend to skip Bucharest totally unless we can find time at the end of the trip. Thanks for replies.

KW: my one-time influence with the Romanian government has waned a bit, but I'll send a letter to the proper department to ask assurance for perfect September weather for you!

Tagwah,
As of today September 22 in Suceava which is quite north the emperature was 23 with a rain shower. As long as you have fleece jackets or something warmer you will be fine. Pack a turtleneck
sweater and think of 40-50 degree weather.
Absolutely do Pelisor and Pelis castles you have traveled this far and spent x $'swhy deprive yourselves of two such different experiences.
I would not change the itinerary that you have planned at all.
pack a rain jacket and umbrella in case it rains and enjoy your trip. I am posting right now from Romania in Rome and Easter Europe by older woman....
Enjoy Romania is an amazing country

Thanks NY.woman,I have been following your helpful and interesting post. I am all packed and ready for cold rainy weather but still being the eternal optimistic. I may head towards Suceava after Maramures if I have enough time. My husband and I are the pack up and go types and don't mind moving from place to place after a night or two. Have decided definitely against driving into Bucharest, my husband might suffer a heart attack, he hates big city driving, so we will drive from the outskirts to OTP to catch our flight home.
