Best Budapest hotel area

Which side of the river would be recommended for a 3 night stay? We are in our 60's, over the night club scene, but like nice restaurants and to be close (<15 min) to "must see" sites.

There are sights - and good hotels - on both sides of the river. I think key though - is being near or on/above the river - to get to both sides and sights with ease.

I stayed at the Le Meridien hotel which was central. Anything around the main square, Erzsébet tér, is going to be a good place to stay. Most of the major hotels are near there.

We stayed at Inter Continental and had a river view. The lights across the river were beautiful at night. Huge lobby and close to many restaurants and attractions

We just booked the Marriott Budapest Hotel for 4 night in late November. Using their best rate guarantee, I was able to get a 169€ a night room with breakfast for 52€!! Deal of the century.

You will like the Marriott and the view to Buda Castle which is right across the Danube.
You got a steal of a deal DebitNM!!

The Inter Continental is nice also and almost next door to the Marriott.

Another great location is the Four Seasons which is housed in the Gresham Palace and is directly in front of the Chain Bridge.

All three of these hotels will give you superb views to Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge.

If you want to be on the Buda side looking down on the Pest side , then the Hilton which is next to the Matthias Church and above the Fisherman's Bastion.

It is a great view from here down to the famous Parliament Building and St.Stephens Basilica, both are lit up at night and gorgeous to see.

Plenty of nice hotels (Marriott, Intercontinental) hard by the river on the Pest side. Budapest is an amalgam of two separate cities "sleepy Buda and bustling Pest" according to a guidebook we looked at years ago.

Pest is where the real action is (Deak Ter, which is the real center of the city; Liszt Ter for contemporary dining options). That said, it's also where Parliament, St. Istvan's, Dohany Utca synagogue and the Jewish Quarter, the Terror Museum, Andrassy Utca, Heroes Square, Budapest Opera House, and Anonymous all are. Buda has the Castle and Gellert Hill.

Since BigRuss gave you an outline of the places on Pest side, let me outline the Buda side.

Reviewing my pictures in the sequence I followed for the Buda side is:

Starting from Liberty Bridge toward Chain Bridge:

1. Hotel Gellert...there are Hot Springs here, lovely inside.
2. St. Gellert Statue just above..
3. The Rock Church.
4. Citadella , which offer terrific views both day and night.
Try to go both day and night up here.

5.Liberty Statue, seen from just about anywhere in Budapest
6. Observation Deck to look down over Danube and Pest.
7. Rudas Baths along Danube, the Schwarzenegger movie Red Heat was filmed here.
8.Queen Elizabeth Statue at Buda side of the Elizabeth Bridge.

Elizabeth was the young pretty and much loved wife of Franz Joseph I Emperor of Austrian Hungary Empire.

She went on a visit to Geneva and while walking on the street was assassination by a political rebel.

9. Above Elizabeth Statue is St. Gellert on a hill in line with Elizabeth bridge.
He is blessing Budapest for converting to Catholicism.

10. Buda Castle which has :

(a) Matthais Fountain , most photographed place at the Castle
(b) National Library
(c) Budapest History Museum
(d) Horse Wrangler Statue
(e) Prince Savoy Statue
(f) Habsburg Gate , on the north side, very ornate.

11. Below the Castle is a funicular to reach the Castle
12. Beside the funicular is a Monument of Kilometer Zero
13. Adam Clark Square ( beside Km Zero) he built the Chain Bridge.

14.Sando Palace, this was once Resident of the President of
Budapest. Now houses his offices.
15 Soldiers Statue in a triangular park, 1849 for the Independence of Homeland

16. Old Town Hall with green clock tower on top, it is kitty corner from ...
17.Trinity Square and the Trinity Monument for the Plaque
victims of 1691.

18. Matthias Church at Trinity Square: The last two Kings were
crowned here.
19. St. Stephen Statue: first King of Hungary
20. Hotel Hilton
21. St. Nicholas Tower, incorporated into Hotel Hilton
22. Pope Innocent XI Statue in square by Hilton

23. Fishermens Bastion ( 1905) to honor fishermen who defended Budapest from the Turks.

24. Below Fishermen Bastion is Corvin Square then...
25. Calvinist Church
26. St.Anna's Church: with its lovely twin green dome tower that glisten in the sun due to special paint to make it glisten.

27. Statue of Jano Hunyadi who was father of the future King
Matthias.

There is a lot to see on the Buda side, but once you are at the Castle it is easy walking to all the other sites going along the Danube.

For the Pest side follow BigRuss's outline.
