This is my short list. You'll find enough good choices in the Seminyak area to fill up a year of weekends! If you're interested in popular spots -- like Sardine, La Lucciola, Sarong, Kudeta -- make dinner reservations sooner rather than later.

La Lucciola
Right on the beach, next to Petitenget temple. Open air Bali style architecture, beautiful all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner and in between. Food is vaguely Italian, vaguely seafood, mostly Australian -- good to very good, and not crazy expensive. But it's the location and ambiance that keep us coming back. Great for a late lunch that bleeds into sunset.

Sardine
Another extraordinarily beautiful bamboo structure, overlooking a dramatically lit rice paddy. A bit pricy, but the food -- mostly seafood -- is inspired. Open for lunch and dinner. Ask for a table on the garden side.

Sarong
An elegant restaurant with a lovely garden. The menu is pan Asian fusion -- best of Indonesian, Chinese, Indian, Thai -- with emphasis on upscale street food. You can mix and match and share or make a whole meal of appetisers and breads. The same owner/chef is behind Mamasan, which is also popular, but a little more hectic.

KuDeTa
So close to the ocean that you can get sprayed by the surf. This is a beautiful spot for wave watching, sunset watching and people watching. World class DJs match the mood. KDT is all about atmospherics. The food can be pretentious and overpriced, but the experience is pure Bali Beach. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus late night drinks.

Baobab
Yet another traditional Indonesian structure, overlooking rice paddies on Jalan Pengubengan Kauh. It's about 15 minutes by taxi from Petitenget and a little hard to find. Both lunch and dinner are delightful. Very, very good food -- mostly seafood with French/African overtones. About half the price of Sardine.

Watercress
In Batu Belig, about 10 minutes by taxi. Bright airy with excellent Sydney-style breakfasts and lunches. Popular with expats from surfers to newagers. Now open for dinner but I haven't tried it yet. Brunches are very good.

Biku was a pioneer in Petitenget. A charming traditional Indonesian house, known for teatime. It's open all day. I'm not wild about most of the food, but the coffee, tea and cakes are worldclass.

Gustu
Some the best ice cream and gelato, anywhere. Unlimited tastings provided. About 15 minutes by taxi on Jalan Mertanadi.

Batu Belig Warung
Right on the beach between the W Hotel and Mosaic. Laid back, rustic and surfer-relaxed. Excellent and affordable sunset drinks. Indonesian food is passable if you linger.

Popular places that I don't especially like are Potato Head, Metis and Mosaic. The food can be quite good but, to me, too fussy for Bali. I'm less fond of the upscale Indonesian places that are now quite popular, though I hear Bamboo is very good. For local food you just have to try your luck at a local cafe or warung.

Fantastic thank you, I was wondering about La Lucciola , I think I will book it for the Saturday as I did think the location looked amazing. I'll book Sardine for Sunday and then a tough decision for Monday!!!
I have been looking at KUDETA and Potato Head but may just do drinks at KDT
All the above sound great! Shame we only have 3 nights!!!

Maybe try one of the Asian inspired places like Sarong, Mamasan or Bamboo. That would be a good combination with late or sunset drinks at KDT.

I'm not a fan of Potato Head. It has a million dollar location that they really don't take advantage of. There are several different dining venues in the complex and I think they've overextended in breadth of offerings. It's always packed though so I guess it's well regarded.

It's funny you mention Mamasan, when I was looking last night that was in my top 5!
I am forgetting we have a late ish flight back to Singapore, so we have a lunch option on the Tuesday also!!
Many thanks again Marmot
Oh and a little tip, when I went to Book the hotel I had a look on their Facebook page and they were offering a discount code which gave me another 15% off! Pays to look at FB pages of chosen hotels...

The name is irrelevant, my point is if you check on a hotels FB page you may just find extra discount!

I've only been to Mamasan for lunch. The food is good, though inconsistent, but I'm less enthusiastic about the setting: these loft-style, enclosed restaurants seem more urban and out of sync with Bali. Good on you for the bonus discount; that should pay for your bonus lunch/brunch.

Marmot, sorry one more thing, how do you usually book La Lucciola, I can't seem to locate an email or online reservation? I don't want to leave it until we get there as I plan to eat there the day we arrive. ( I ideally don't want to call them but will do if it's the only option)

I suspect they don't do on-line bookings.

Two reasons...

- They are so popular, that they don't need to;

- And on-line booking requests would result in a lot of mischief, with people not showing up, thus the business would lose a lot of revenue.

I always make reservations by telephone-- at La Lucciola and every else. Another idea is to give your list to the concierge at your resort who will sort it out for you. They will do this prior to your arrival.

I often plan an early dinner at La Lucciola before a late flight. You can get there for sunset, have a leisurely meal then stop back at your hotel before heading to the airport. I always request a table downstairs in the front because I like being outside, but the view is better upstairs.

Bob, I don't spend much time in Legian so I have to do some research. Funny though, on the Stones' website all of the options they list under "nearby dining" except Gado-Gado are in Seminyak or Petitenget. There are tons of small, unpretentious restaurants on all the little Legian streets both near the beach and further inland. You won't have any problem finding simple. I'll see if I can come up with some names.
