Ideas for 25th Wedding Anniversary Trip - HELP! A day's drive from DC.
I tried over and over to specify five states on the east coast, but somehow was incapable.
We recently moved to Washington, D.C. and loving it! We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and would like to go somewhere for a week a day's driving distance from DC. We are a well travelled couple who have spent many years traveling with our children to many of the states in the US, Europe and Canada. We had booked our trip initially at the Primland Resort (afterall, you only have one 25th wedding anniversary), but our budget and common sense got the best of us (we are still in the midst of a remodel in our new rowhouse in DC, and still own our home in MN - ugh!).
We are looking to really gear down, relax, read, be located in a beautiful, scenic spot where we could get out and walk/hike. We love history (just went to Gettysburg for the first time last weekend and loved it!), arts, good food. It would be nice if there was a town close by to go in for dinner, shopping. Quaint area. I looked at the Blue Ridge Mountains, but I don't know anything about good location. Still researching. We are open to mountains, ocean, just as long as the scenery is beautiful. We have been to Maine, and NYC, but otherwise, most of our travel has been midwest and western US so we are looking forward to seeing new places. Oh, and golf for my husband would be an added bonus. We plan on going the third week of September.

I really like Western Massachusetts (the Berkshires). And I'm not just saying that because you tagged Massachusetts. I don't know about golf, though.
I drove there from Silver Spring, MD a few years ago (using the scenic route through PA and then up the Taconic in NY) and it took about 8 hours (I only stopped once).

what states did you want to tag the thread? The monitors can add tags if you need . . .
FYI - the way to tag multiple states to hold down the Apple/command key (on a Mac - on a PC I 'think' it s the CTRL key but others will know for sure) and then click the various states. I think we are limited to 4 tags maximum which may have been your problem (though I've seen threads where the monitors/editors have added more tags)

The Berkshires is a great suggestion, it hits all your marks. Great Barrington, Stockbridge and Lenox are all somewhat quaint with good restaurants and fun shops. THere is pretty scenery, and lots of places to hike or canoe or kayak or bike. And there are some historic and cultural attractions as well, such as the Rockwell Museum, Chesterwood, and Hancock Shaker Village to name just a few.
Keep in mind, the scenery isn't dramatically beautiful, the way big mountains or ocean coast can be. It's rolling hills, farmland, trees, lake views and lovely sunsets.
The area around Lake Champlain and Burlington Vt might also suit. Lots of cute villages to visit, a few museums and historic sites, and the lovely Green Mountains as well as the lake. But that's a bit of a long drive for you.

I will give you a couple of suggestions.
Grove Park Inn or The Biltmore Inn in Asheville, NC. I think the spa at Grove Park is the best I have ever seen! I think it is a fun town to explore and it has several great restaurants. A couple of other suggestions: Blackberry Farm in Tennessee, or The Swag in Waynesville NC.
I think Richmond Virginia is one of the nicest towns - I don't know of a great place to stay but the food and environment is just lovely.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. Now to go research. As for asking help from the monitors to add states, I guess I don't know how to do that either. My! I was holding down the command key, but I was expecting the state to stay highlighted and it didn't. I was surprised that I even got MA.
Maybe my problem is there are so many choices, I don't know how to zero in. Not a bad problem is it?
