Stockholm/Archipelago Dinner Cruise
We'll be in Stockholm for four full days later this week. We've mapped out various museums to see each day. We want to take a boat trip into the Archipelago, and we're toying with the idea of a dinner cruise.
Any feedback or experience? Food quality versus price? Worthwhile or better to do a day trip/cruise? We have considered Waxholm and Grinda. Birka looks interesting, but it's a full day and the other direction....
We are an active couple with a seven year old. This will be at the end of the trip and we will have been walking a lot over the prior three days so something more mellow may be welcome at that stage of the trip.

We are currently in the Archipelago, spending a week here.
The weather is incredible, probably becoming Caribbean-like with nearly 30oC during the day and then huge local short thunderstorms in the afternoon as a result of the humidity.
We went to Vaxholm yesterday, it is a bustling little place very much like some of the Scottish ports we know so well. Full of people heading off somewhere and boaters. Some great shops for interior design and lots of very busy cafes. It is very much " the day trip from Stockholm" town.
I wouldn't actually rush about looking for something in the Archipelago which isn't here. The beauty is in the whole not the parts. In that respect, is a little like the South Carolina marshes we know and love so well. As the land is fairly uniformly low and without mountains the views don't hugely change. It is just one large beautiful place.
Dispell one large urban myth.
It is not that expensive to be here. Eating out is a little more expensive than other countries but unlike The States there is no need to add on 30% to the menu prices for tax and tips.
Supermarket shopping is cheaper than the UK, clothes and interior gifts again seem reasonable compared with elsewhere. Unlike Norway, we haven't felt the need to ring our bank manager every afternoon asking to send another wheelbarrow of cash.
We haven't been to Stockholm yet and so can't comment. We are there next weekend.
We are renting a boat today, probably going to Grinda but love wildlife and so may head off into the skerries for peace and quiet.
We are taking the ferry at some stage to Sandhamn which by all accounts is the Stockholm Portofino and sounds good fun.

I went only as far as Waxholm. Loved it! Felt no need to go further, but that also means that I can't say whether it would have been worthwhile to go further....

I would agree with Kja.
After spending most of today buzzing about in a power boat and covering an awful lot of water. It's all pretty much similar.
Vaxholm is a good trip out.
Will let you know if Sandhamn is work the extra hour each way, from Stockholm.
Still 28oC today, cloudless sky but the thunder bombs are just forming. I have a feeling that we may be in for another show this evening.

We have a house in Sweden so shop alot in Swedish and Danish supermarkets, some items are less expensive, some more. The weather has been fabulous since Easter, everyone looks bronzed and blond(e).
If Gotland appealed, maybe Bornholm might also be of interest. Its a holiday island for Danes and one of the few parts of Denmark with cliffs. The Gothenburg archipelago also, as a change from the Stockholm one.

We've already visited Bornholm in 1996 and spent 3 or 4 days there. Also Marieham and Aero and Funen.
I was blown away by Gotland- the weather helped,and now I realise that you can do a long weekend from the U.K.
I'd love to hear more on this thread though or any other recommendations

Too hot, didn't go today.
Definitely going tomorrow.
We had a very Swedish day today, drove up to the local lake, swam out to wooden pontoons and generally messed about in the water with hundreds of others.
One thing in the Swedish psychologically seems to be the need to jump in water.....anywhere.
They just some to pull the car over, find a rock and jump in.

Sandhamn hands down.
Vaxholm is fine but has the feeling of a place people pass through to get to somewhere else.
Sandhamn is wonderful. Old fishing cottages, cafes, restaurants but not big. Walk round the back of the main street to see Swedish shabby chic at its best. I imagine the houses are passed through the generations of multi millionaires who don't have to try very hard. A very laid back place, great for people watching and affluent Swedes do seem a little eccentric!
There is a beautiful beach 1.5km walk out of town, lovely for swimming.
You can hire bikes and they have childrens models. Few roads on the islands just lots of wide paths for cycles.
The ferry without a formal dinner leaves Stockholm at 9:30 arrives 11:40 and leaves Sandhamn to return at 5:15pm. Only one a day and so don't miss it.
Well worth a day trip.
If you like wildlife watch out for the sea eagles on the skerries, they are huge but lazy and don't seem to fly much.

Based on Dickie_Gr's recommendation we went with the trip to Sandhamm. It was great. Boat ride was scenic both ways. Island is very nice. We rented bikes and road around. We had a good lunch, enjoyed the marina and just hanging around.

We had a magical day at Sandhamn.
The heat just dipped and the thunderstorms rolled over from Latvia. We swam at the lovely beach on the north end of the island with small islands off-shore and yonder rumbling but still 27oC, very moody day for weather.
Travelling has taught me many things.
Sweden taught me how to relax.
We also had the chance of a lifetime in Stockholm. The owner of Bianchi bikes lives in the city and it was possible to hire very expensive road bikes for a small fee. This cost me a fortune as they were so much fun, I have just bought one at home.
