Was wondering if anyone had suggestions/opinions about guesthouses in Dublin.

We'll be in Dublin Sept 18-21 (2 adults) and are currently looking at places to sleep. A lot of the hotels seem to be booked for that weekend so I'm wondering if there is something going on in town?

Then I came across some guesthouses that look nice and are more reasonably priced than the hotels so was curious if anyone has gone this route?

Where are the guest houses located? How long a trip to the center of the city?

Depends on what you want to do and what your budget is.

we stay only in very central locations - since our limit is time, not money - and we despise having to trek from a suburb into where the sights are. But if you have more time it might not matter.

A friend and I stayed at Fitzwilliam guest house by Merrion Row in Dublin; good location, reasonable price; we checked in ON 9/11, and watched the second tower collapse in the downstairs tv area. I mention this because they were very kind and took good care of us. We stayed a couple of extra days and then went up to Skerries till we could get flights out.

We thought, good location, good price, nice people -- worth checking out on the review sites.

They have openings and good price, 76 euros a night. I stay at two places in Dublin and both are booked. Must be something going on in the city. I found one medical convention but that was all.

The All-Ireland Football Final takes place on the 3rd Sunday in September. It is Ireland's Gaelic Football big day of the year.

The finalists have not yet emerged, so not many fans will yet have booked accommodation. I suspect that many hotels are holding back rooms because they have hopes of getting premium rates. If the Dublin team qualifies (which is considered quite likely) the demand for rooms will not be as heavy.

You could play chicken with the hoteliers, or you could modify your plans. The modification would be to drop Saturday night from your Dublin programme.

Padraig, I looked to see if it was the Garth Brooks concerts but see he is not coming if they don't give him the five concert dates at Croke Park. You do have Joan Baez coming to Dublin.
I should have looked at sporting events. Makes sense though.

Thanks for the information everyone! I found a bunch of guesthouses that have availability so I think we are going to book one of those!

never stayed in any of them but the Grafton has a good central location. It looks a bit tired from the pics so is really probably tired looking in person.
The Abbot doesn't look bad but a little out of the way of where I prefer to stay. I will look at the others.

Charleville is not a great location, would eliminate that one. Dublin Citi Hotel is iffy, I love the other side of the Liffey, can you tell? The Glen is in a fair location. Maybe someone with chime in that has stayed at one of these places. I would stay at the travel lodge due to the location.

This place is clean, economical, 10 minute bus ride from downtown, great breakfast, very friendly staff.
