Help! Only a few days in CROTIA: where would you go?
Hi Everybody,
We'd like to do a side trip in Croatia this coming mid-to-late September (our first time there). We'll be based near Venice, Italy and may drive from there.
With only 3 nights in Croatia, where would you go? DUBROVNIK with a side trip to an outlying island? Or concentrate on a smaller city like ROVINJ and its surroundings?
Any advice on inexpensive accomodations (B&Bs) would also be greatly appreciated.
We love to explore new areas by foot... and also like to mix in nightlife and explore interesting artsy shops as well.
Thanks!

With only three nights, in September, I'd drive to Rovinj if you have a rental car and explore Istria around Rovinj. Dubrovnik is too far to drive in that short of time, unless you want to spend half of it driving.

I was in Croatia for 5 days. I stayed in Zagreb and made a two day trip up north to Plitvice Falls. You really only need a day there but you MUST go!!! Google it to see the pictures--they are a very fair representation of what this beautiful place looks like!!! I wouldn't recommend anything else.

Andrew,
Thanks for weighing in! Is there anything in the areas around Rovinj not to be missed? Also, we'd love to have one evening to go dancing, etc. Do any of the surrounding towns have more of a nightlife? Cheers!

I haven't actually been to Rovinj. I've been to Slovenia (loved it) and to Zagreb, Plitvice, Split, Dubrovnik, etc. But I wanted to go to Rovinj and Istria - it just didn't work out on my two trips to the area.
I wasn't too excited about Zagreb myself - worth seeing if you are passing through but not a highlight of my trip to Croatia. I loved Plitvice Lakes National Park (a highlight of all of my trips to Europe) - but there is no nightlife in the area, just tiny towns.
I loved Ljubljana, Slovenia - a delightful little city, a college town with great architecture, about three hours drive from Venice. Many people see nearby Lake Bled as well - a big tourist attraction. You could stop at one or the other and perhaps drive on to Plitvice with a night there. Or you could drive from Venice to Rovinj through Istria and perhaps swing up to Plitvice that way. There are a lot of things you could do in the area in three nights - but driving all the way to Dubrovnik isn't something I'd recommend.

Andrew: Many thanks! I think we'll base ourselves in Rovinj and either explore another island south of there... or make our way towards Motovun for Truffle Season.
kawh: Thank you!
