Dear,
I will arrive at Santiago 24 december to flight Puerto Montt and stay 6 days in Puerto Varas using a car, Is it possible to use public transport and private tour in Santiago during 2 days or it is better to rent a car?

Hi Juliano!
If you prefer the idea of public transport, it is very good. Santiago now has an integrated transport policy which is the most advanced or at least ambitious in the developing world. The metro, though not extensive, is fast, clean and efficient.
I don't know where in Santiago you are staying but the 'red line' is the useful one. For the main shopping area get off at Universidad de Chile. Buses too are now first rate and easy to use. The bus lines and metro are integrated so one ticket can take you from one onto the other and back again.
For the bars & nightlife of Suecia get off at Pedro de Valdivia. For the restaurants of Bellavista, get off at Baquedano and walk across the river which brings you onto Pio Nono, the main street.

In general: you will not enjoy driving in Santiago. Only rent a car if you are planning to use it to drive to somewhere outside the city for the day. Traffic and parking are not worth dealing with in a city you don't know. The metro will take you anywhere you want to go (avoid at rush hour on weekdays) and taxis are plentiful. The metro lines are referred to by number not colour and line 1 will probably be the one you most use.
There are good waking tours of the city, both paid and "for tips". There is also a hop on/hop off bus, if walking doesn't suit you, which will cover most of the city.
Now, specific to your dates: on the 24th of December everything will close early, by about 7 pm. This is because Chileans celebrate Christmas on the 24th at night. Some restaurants may be open in the evening but most won't be. The 25th is an obligatory holiday: businesses must close for the day to give employees a day off. There are exceptions: public transport (though reduced service) restaurants (if they wish), cinemas, small family run shops etc., but the city will be very quiet. Some tours will be running for tourists but I don't know specifically which ones. If you are staying at a hotel, they should know. Although some restaurants will be open for lunch on the 25th, you are less likely to find something open in the evening (outside of hotels).

Well, i will use public transport, now it´s time to find a good hotel/hostel in a good place.
24 and 25 december is like my country (Brazil), Celebrate christmas and holiday next day.

Yes. You can get a Transvip shared shuttle to any address for about US$10-12 depending on where you are going. Cheaper, but more hassle, an airport bus to any stop on line 1 and walk or connect to another line to get where you are going. All lodging should have a "how to get there" bit which will mention metro routes.

I agree. Take a taxi, and you will get to downtown in less than 20 minutes. There are plenty of organised taxi firms at the airport. (transvip exclusive etc)
For hotels or apartmenets - I would chose Pedro de Valdivia area of Providencia. Las Condes is nice but better to stay a little more central. Besides - you have everything in walking distance from here. And now even the mall up the road can be reached within 10 mins walking. Take the Turistik London Style bus to see the sights... Santiago is true a faviourite of mine

we heard lots of negatives abut Santiago...and found most everything we were told to be way out of sync. We were pleasantly surprised by the city, its people, its history and its sights. We waited to rent a car on the day we headed west to Valpo and Vina del Mar.
