Arriving by cruise ship and want to get to the circumvesuvio train. Try as I might can't seem to find a bus to local train to get to the circumvesuvio. Walking no problem. Suggstions? Thanks.

It's too far to walk, so I would take a taxi. That said, read up in a good guidebook or online on the typical cost of a taxi ride from the port to the train station and the local customs of using a taxi in Naples. (You either choose a flat fare or go by the meter.) There is an unfortunate history of cruise ship tourists getting fleeced by unscrupulous drivers.

By the way, the spelling of the name of the commuter train to Pompei is the "Circumvesuviana"

At least it wasn't my imagination that I could find no public transportation. And maybe if I had spelled it right would have found more info. Thanks so much.

There is public transportation, but my personal recommendation is that you take a taxi unless you are confident you can ace finding your way to the nearest metro stop and buying a ticket and not lose a lot of time doing so. It is not hard, but it takes some time and advance knowledge.

i was slightly surprised to read Sandralist's answer to you as Naples has a pretty good public transport system. Sure enough, it appears that there is a bus from the cruise port to Stazione Garibaldi, aka the main train station in Naples, where you can catch the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii etc. [it's downstairs on the main concourse - look for trains to Sorrento]

Last PS:

The Circumvesuviana trains leave from the downstairs area of the main Napoli Centrale station, so you should be researching ways to get from the docks to Napoli Centrale

How much experience do you have negotiating Naples public transportation system? Or are you just going by what "appears" on the internet?

I've spent more time in Naples than most people, and unless you are experienced with the city, it is simplest to use the taxis, which are not expensive and which are plentiful. But even there you need to be alert.

But please feel free to correct me based on personal experience and tell the OP how many times you have traveled on the public buses of Naples and used the metro.

My answer to the OP isn't shouldn't have been a "surprise" to you. what really isn't a surprise is people reacting more to who posts information than a sincere desire to help people who are traveling to a new city for the first time. When you did that in Naples, you got lost and confused trying to use public transportation. Other people will too, and if they are limited by a port of call timetable, it can get serious.

well if you can read, sandralist, you will see that it was dark, we had wandered off the beaten track, we weren't near any main streets or landmarks and though we knew roughly where we were and where we were going we couldn't work out how to get there. Completely different to the situation of the OP who will be arriving in daylight at a main landmark of Naples and wanting to get to another major landmark. and I don't see any sign of the OP being under a time pressure - s/he is arriving at the port, not leaving from there.

You yourself say that there can be problems with the taxis fleecing tourists.
Are you denying that there is public transportation [ie a bus] from the port to the train station?

I still don't understand why you would not mention the existence of the bus [and I suspect the metro] and let the OP make his own mind up. I made it clear to the OP that I had let my fingers do the walking and that s/he should do his/her own research. Isn't that more helpful than just saying "get a dodgy taxi"?

BTW, there's no point in continuing this - let the OP make his/her own mind up.

PS -we didn't as it happens get lost using public transport - we were walking back to the station and intending to do so. if we'd stuck to public transport, we'd have been fine.

The very same transport that runs from the airport to the train station also runs to the port - the Alibus. There are also buses/trams/metro. It's convenient as there are frequent departures (every 10-15 minutes).

No need to take a taxi unless you want to, but I would make sure it was an official taxi. There's also a tram.

I have used the Alibus several times. The Alibus stop is near the intersection of Via Columbo and Piazza Municipio and is roughly a couple of blocks from where you dock. It makes a stop at the train station and the airport and returns, so you can't make a mistake. The first stop form the port is the train station. If you look up Alibus, you should be able to find current price, etc.

Honestly, I thought using the Alibus and Circumvesuviana train were both pretty easy, but I did not use the metro in Naples. I do know there is a tram and two bus lines that connect with the station. We used them years ago, but I am a big fan of Naples and love walking there, only take a bus or taxi when I need to get to the airport or train station or someplace at a particular time.

Naples is, infortunately, the only place I have ever been where I knew for certain the taxi quote was way too high. We were leaving a cruise a couple of days early and, with a couple of bags, we just wanted to get to the airport as comfortably as possible. The guys at the port were quoting rates several times what they should have been. I turned to DH and said, "Oh, we will just take the Alibus." One driver immediately said, "Oh, you have been to Naples, you know Naples?" I responded "Si" and he said, "Oh, for you, only. . . . " and cut it to nearly half. Of course, it was still a good bit more than the bus, but easy and convenient.

If you are dragging luggage or in a big hurry, I would say taxi. If time is not a huge issue, Alibus if fine.
